Car Insurance

We have booked a Virgin Flydrive but have declined to take their car insurance as it seemed very expensive. Am thinking of arranging insurance independently maybe even an annual policy.

Has anybody else done this? Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated

No experience of this, we usually buy ins with hire car. One warning though, American policies very often have a high deductable (excess in UK-the amount you pay if you have an accident). Read policy wording carefully.

I believe the Annual policy companies themselves don't recommend for fly drives but don't know why, someone will answer.
Personally I just ignore the Virgin car and book thru Airline Network or USrentacar(been cheaper for us this year). Don't tell them though or they charge a fee.
An AP could possibly save us money but it does not interest me, I don't want any hassle when arriving after 9 hours on plane, also if I have a dent in car when returning I don't want the hassle of a claim.
I keep asking if anyone has claimed on one of these policies in US yet and no-one replies only for claims in Europe.
If you are on a tight budget and can deal with hard sell from Car rental rep then look into it.

I use my own SLI LDW from insurance4carhire.com. Use it with Alamo and Dollar no problems at all.

I have claimed on my Amex policy and just gave the car hire company (Dollar) a claim number provided by Amex and they did the rest.

This is becasue people were getting hassle at the counter to upgrade to more insurance they dont need. Its how they make their money on flydrives.

I have used the policy with Dollar and ALamo on flydrives with no problems. I did however get the hard sell off Alamo. Dollar did not even ask to see the policy.
