Is anybody's car insurance card good for more than 6 months?

We have State Farm and get a new one every six months. It drives me crazy because I feel like I never have the current one. They send it so far ahead of the effective date that I don't do anything with it when I get it because I don't want to carry two, but then I forget to switch when it's time to switch.

I think I would switch companies if there was one where I didn't have to change cards all the time!

We have State Farm and our cards are effective for a year. They do send a new set every 6 months.

We have State Farm too, also six months (I think - at least they seem to send cards that often, everytime our insurance premiums are due). It doesn't bother me that much. I just stick one new one in my wallet and one new one in the car as soon as I get them, and leave the old ones in there. By the time the next card rolls around, I take out the oldest and leave the newest two in the car/wallet. What does bother me is that it seems like a few weeks after we get our new cards, we get another new set in the mail with the same dates on it. I don't understand what the problem is, but I just stick the duplicates in my filing box.

We pay every six months. I wonder if there's a company that would give you a card for a year if you were willing to pay annually instead of biannually? I don't know that much about it; I sent my husband on the car-insurance quest and I've been pretty happy with his selection. We did have Liberty Mutual before State Farm and they were fine, but when we combined renter's insurance and got a second car, State Farm was the better deal and continued to be when we changed from renter's to homeowners. LM was also six months, I think.

We have State Farm and pay monthly and ours are good for 6months.

and we get cards that are only good for 6 months also..we pay 2x a year, don't know if that's why, or if it's just a State Farm thing..when I lived in MA, we had Safety Insurance, and the cards were good for an entire year

Just call your agent and ask for your policy to renew annually vs semi-annually. You might miss out on 6 months of a discount doing that, but you could also miss out on 6 months of an increase if you get a ticket too. Most car policies are set up every 6 months but changing it to yearly isn't a big deal, just punching in a couple numbers in the computer. You will then get new cards good for a year.

I'm in NJ and I have First Trenton and get cards that are good for a year. Before then I had Prudential and Allstate - both year cards.

Tri State- good for a year. I just switched from AllState and I am paying now for a year what I was paying allstate for 6 months!!

Erie..

Ours are good for a year.

Ours are State Farm. My vehicle is renewed every six months. My wifes is renewed every year, but her's is insured through our business with a yearly policy. Personal auto policies can not be issued for a year.

Nationwide -- 6 mos. And this past time I don't think they sent them. I'm sure they're trying to get us to print them online ourselves, but that wasn't working properly either. I ended up getting new cards from the agency and from Nationwide directly after I sent them an e-mail.

Personal auto policies can most certainly be issued for a year. Most companies issue them at 6 months but they CAN and ARE issued for a year. Depending on the company most agents will issue policies at 6 months because of how they are compensated for the policies, that is the main reason. The company likes you to have 6 month policies so they can catch any infractions quicker, thus earning more premium. Again, call your agent and ask that your policies be moved to an annual renewal-it is as simple as that unless the laws in your state don't allow that-rare though.

Am I the only one that keeps the card in the car instead of in my wallet?

Ours is with State Farm as well and we get them every 6 months when the bill is due.

I think I had eight years worth of "proof of insurance" cards in our old car when I cleaned out the glove box to sell it. We just stick the new card in the plastic wallet in front of the old ones and do the same with the registration.

No, ours are definitely kept in our car. They're car specific, not driver-specific.

We keep our card in the car also. If you don't, what happens if someone else is driving the car and get stopped. I thought proof of insurance and registration was supposed to be in the car?
