My trial is about to expire. I want to purchase, but am debating getting a newer computer. If I buy a newer computer will I be allowed to copy over the software to the new computer or will I have to repurchase all over again? Help please!
Thanks!

You can transfer to your new computer. Been there done that!

I currently only have LR and was wondering if there are things that can be done with Capture NX that can't be done with LR or are they approximately the same?

Thank you everyone! I appreciate it!
Roger, I don't know the answer because I've never used Lightroom; sorry! Hopefully someone else who knows will respond.

Roger.......I've only dabbled with LR in the past so I can't make a good comparison between the 2. But personally, for editing Nikon NEFs, there is no substitute for CNX2. Without the need for plugins, all Picture Control information from in-camera is read by CNX2. You can save multiple versions of an image as a single NEF. But I think the U Point technology is the number one reason I've preferred it. If you are considering using it, Jason Odell has a great book and several video tutorials that help in understanding this software a great deal.

No knock on LR as it's a great application. I just find working with my Nikon RAW files to be much more intuitive with CNX2.

There's a lot more that can be done in Capture NX then in LR. However Capture is much more complicated and feels "clunky" compared to LR. That could just be me and my computer though. (I do have plenty of space and memory though) When you move a slider in LR it's instantaneous, when you move a slider in Capture you have to give it a second or two to register. I get frustrated and shut it down. Again that could just be me and the fact that I'm very comfortable in LR. I think it would be much less frustrating for me if I didn't have little ones vying for my attention and adding to the confusion, lol.

It should also be noted that NX is quite the performance hog. Although they have made an improvement since NX1, you will still need a fairly high performance machine to get the best performance out of it. My current pc that I built 2 years ago still runs the application fine during heavy batch processing, etc. But, I'm also running a dual core 3.2 Ghz cpu, 8GB ram, and a 10,000 rpm primary sata hard drive with 64 bit Vista Ultimate as the OS. There are features such as thumbnail caching and image caching that can help improve things within the application as well.

Danny, I just heard, "wah, wah, wah," LOL. (DH and I's joke when we don't get what the other is saying, haha) I have a Dual Core but to be honest I couldn't tell you what the other stuff is, she's 3+years old though. My next computer will be tricked out specifically for photo work. (I will let DH be the one to figure out what I need) PSP, LR and CS4 all run pretty smooth on it though.(these are set to load up when I load them not on computer start up) I so want to use Capture NX but it is just slow enough to make me nuts. No doubt it is my set up.

I have a dual core computer too and have the same issues and no problem with CS3. I still love it enough that I am willing to put up with the sluggishness. It's worth it to me. That's why I need to get a newer/faster computer.

In my earlier post I realized I didn't really make it clear about the image caching and thumbnail caching. Try disabling those to see if it improves performance. Also make sure you are not keeping all edit steps active which can really use up some cpu power. All of these things can be enabled/disabled in the Preferences.

I keep hinting heavily to DH that I need a faster computer. So far he's not biting. I will just bide my time, eventually he's going to need more speed and then I will have my bargaining chip.:rotfl:

So if the edit steps aren't active can you still go back and undo them if you change your mind? Or do you have to start over?

I hope you guys don't think I'm knocking Capture, not at all. I think it's an awesome program. It's just that with the chaos in my home (1 new teen and two almost 4yr olds) I barely get time to process at all so I lean towards simple right now.

Wen, this is probably better explained from CNX2 literature.....

Use this option to control how the editing of steps in the Edit List palette is handled. When this option is turned off, the editing of a step in the Edit List palette causes any following step to be temporarily disabled. When this option is turned on, steps will not be temporarily disabled, and you will be able to see the impact of the changes made with all steps being considered.
Please note:
when this option is turned on, additional processing will be required as all enhancements will be processed in real time. Turning this option on is only recommended for computers with powerful processors.
