A few weeks ago I posted about wanting a good walkaround lens and you all gave me some great advice, well now I have a potential T1i kit picked out (the walkaround doesnt have as wide a zoom range but I liked the idea of a USM)...For me the walkaround lens, while not very fast, has about the bare minimum I would want for zoom range and I can use the 50mm if I need something fast. Here's my potential lineup

T1i body

EF-S 15-85 USM or 17-85 USM (depends if the 15-85 goes down in price - the 17-85 has its haters but I think I'd like it fine)

EF 50 1.8 (I wanted the 1.4 but $100 for 1.8 is too tempting)

EF 70-200 f/4L USM (I might decide to go with a much cheaper model since this is kind of pricey (but not for an L lens), but I really want to be able to crop generously with this, so I figured you can't go wrong with L in terms of quality and resolution!)

I was just hoping some of you might be able to throw in your two cents about these lenses - Is there a similar combination of lenses that you have that you think is a better value than what I've got here? I really appreciate all the valuable advice I get on this board! :cutie:

Depending on price and reviews I'd go with the 15-85mm. But we'll have to wait and see how that one does.

I personally have the 50mm 1.8 and love it...especially for the price. This lens takes the picture like I see it through the viewfinder. Currently though I only have the kit lens for my walkaround. I am only about 8 months in to the dSLR world.

I found this site awhile ago and maybe it could help you. At the time it was there 5 most wanted lenses for Canon.

Canon's 17-85 has it's quirks, including considerable distortion and chromatic abberation. If these will not be factors in the kind of photography you do then it might be a good choice. The new 15-85 is likely to hold it's price for awhile unless initial sales are dismal. For what it costs the 18-55 is worth getting with the body, image quality is pretty good and maximum aperture is the same as the 15-85.

The 50 f/1.4 is better than the f/1.8 in focusing, bokeh, and a little bit of sharpness but this lens is really showing it's age and a real USM would be nice for the $300. Canon really needs a fast, inexpensive lens in the 28-35 range. At about $100 the f/1.8 looks like a real bargain, get one.

As the lowest price L lens and one of Canon's sharpest the 70-200 f/4 is a good entry point into premium lenses. It is small and light enough to carry all day and fast enough for stage shows. The focusing speed can usually keep up while panning race cars. I keep thinking of carrying a 55-250 but the image quality of the L is too good to resist, especially wide open. Canon is *very* proud of their L tripod mount but the black one works just as well for a lot less $$$. I would definitely use the tripod mount with a plastic Rebel body!
