I've been reading all the posts and recommendations about lenses through here, and reviews on other sites as well. I believe I've decided to get my first L series glass. I had an old film Rebel XS, but I bought an XT about 6 weeks ago. I had a sigma 28-200 mm lens, but it doesn't work with my new XT, and I contacted sigma and it's too old to be re-chipped. :sad1: I loved my sigma lens and I used it all the time-it was my walk around lens. It had come with me to Europe 3 times, WDW twice, and not to mention I don't know how many weddings/baptisms/family events. In fact once I bought it, I never put the kit lens on it again!:cool1: I don't think I'm interested in buying another non-canon lens, just in case I buy another camera, and I don't want to have the same problem. I'm just wondering if anyone can post pictures they've taken with the Canon 70-200mm f/4L lens. I'm not buying the IS version, as this is stretching my budget as it is. I had looked into the 75-300 lens, but I feel it's worth it for me to try the L glass.

Please post any pictures with this lens! I need to feel like I'm making the right choice!:woohoo: Thanks

Canon's 70-200 f/4 is a very good lens, sharp, quick focusing, and well built.

I had one for 2 years, it is a great lens! I sold it to buy the f2.8 version and was disappointed by it, The f4 version is much sharper! The only bad thing about the one I bought was that I had to send it Canon to be calibrated, it had a back focusing issue:[

Thank you boBQuincy and We-Luv-Disney. Those are beautiful pictures. I looked and them and ordered the lens!  I ordered from cameracanada, it's easier to order from Canada because you never know what you'll end up paying once something crosses the border! This way I can also get a $30 rebate through Canon Canada. I'll post some pictures once I get the lens, but I'll warn you, I'm still learning!

That was way too easy! It usually takes at least a half dozen posts from us before someone goes and drops a lot of loot on some new equipment. ;)

Enjoy your new lens! :)

I think I had already decided (don't I sound certain!), but I just wanted to see a few pics from people I trusted before I went out and bought one. I am crazy for spending the money, but I couldn't stand not having good enough reach. I'm going to have so much fun with this lens, I have a wedding coming up, plus we have a big festival during Labor Day weekend, and I'm taking a trip to Toronto and maybe a trip to Maine... If it's here by Friday (which I doubt, but I hear they ship fast) I'll take it to a parade too... I can't wait!!!:woohoo:

i love my 70-200f4 so i don't think you will regret the purchase one bit..... but i just went to toronto and didn't use it at all, used my 28-135 instead which i basically never used at home...it worked great so now that is my walk around but since i just got the tokina fisheye last sat i really like that one as well....at least now i have 3 great lenses to play with:lmao:

btw bob fantastic photo was that with your teleconverter or cropped ....or are you personal friends with that flamingo and he let you get that close?;)

Thanks, but my bad, the flamingo photo was taken with my 55-200 set at 200. The bird was only maybe 10 feet away and I moved slowly because he was watching me closely!

This one was with the 70-200:

I love this lens. I have not regretted anything about it. For me it was the right balance of quality, cost and weight.

Enjoy

btw bob it's still a great photo no matter what lens you used;)

I know the saying "if you have to ask you can't afford it". But ballpark, how much is this lens (US$) - IS and non-IS (at least I think there is an IS version)?

I think the non IS version is going for about $570-$600. The IS model (which I have heard great things about) is going for around $1050.

There is quite a range in price from the f4.0 to the f2.8 IS. I paid about $500 used from bhphoto in good condition for the f4.0 non-IS version. You can get it new for about $550. I think this is pretty reasonable but it is not cheap.

The IS version jumps the price of the 4.0 to a little over $1000. The f2.8 non IS version is a little more than the f4.0 IS version. The 2.8 IS version jumps the price to over $1500

The other thing to consider is the weight. I think there is more than a pound, maybe a pound and a half difference between the 4.0 non IS and the 2.8 IS.

check around and see , like everything else, since i got mine new about 7-8 months ago for a little under $500( google was running a money off deal plus it was on sale) if you can stand it (:)) sometimes it pays to wait and keep your eye out and someone will have a good deal.i can't for the life of me remember where i got it, maybe J&R. i just got a new tokina lens on sale for about 115 less than anyone else was selling it for via buydig, just keep checking and use reseller or someone to compare prices

I have to say thanks again for all the great pictures! :cheer2: :cheer2: They really are amazing. I can't wait for my lens!! I only wish that I was planning a trip to WDW!
