We just got back from an all inclusive trip to Cancun. We had always wanted to go on a trip like this, but had not been able to bring ourselves to book something non-Disney. Dh and I have been together for 8.5yrs and have been to Disney 5 times during our relationship and all other trips were just driving trips closer to home. We wanted a change.

Although I tried to fight it, I found myself comparing this trip to a Disney trip. Here's some random thoughts. I'd love to hear if any of you have had similar or maybe even very different experiences.
Cancun AND Disney trip:
Beautiful scenery
Great weather
Great people
Both have mediocre food (other than the more expensive restaurants which we had to avoid for $$ reasons)

Differences:
More relaxing than Disney
Cancun was much more quiet (just a handful of children)Entertainment at night and local shows not as good as Disney
In Cancun, you had to work harder to find new things to do. At Disney, it's all at your fingertips.
The language barrier in Mexico could be considered both a pro and con. We enjoyed trying to learn Spanish, but found it frustrating when we needed help but couldn't get people to understand us.
The ocean was beautiful and soothing.

In short, we had a wonderful trip. I enjoyed seeing the major sites (ie. Mayan ruins) and the resorts were beautiful. I loved soaking it all in. However, I'm not one to enjoy sitting around for long. After we did some sight-seeing and shopping, our money was running out so we couldn't afford to leave the all inclusive resort for the last couple days. The result? I got a little bored. I admit it! I guess that if we had a larger budget for the trip, we could have done more (as you can also spend lots of money on "extras" in Disney too). I still found myself thinking of all the things we could do in Disney even when the money is getting low. (ie. we always buy either annual passes or parkhoppers so even when money's low, we can still enjoy the rides and shows).

Ideally, I'd like to go on two trips a year; one to Disney and one somewhere new. That way I'm still getting cultured!! What are your thoughts on your non-Disney trips??? Thanks for your input!

Like you I need to keep busy on trips which is why I don't think I would enjoy a trip like Cancun. It just seems to boring for me. Friends just returned and loved the fact that all they did was drink, eat and sleep, and while it would be great for some it is not my idea of a vacation.

Glad you had a wonderful trip!:D

We like traveling anywhere, anytime, doesn't have to be WDW...

BUT!! (there's always a but):D

we're finding that the "Disney Way of Doing Things" makes lots of other places pale in comparison...and not just with the things to do...the resorts are wonderful, and even if you leave the resort, you're still in a (wonderfully controlled, beautifully landscaped, always something new/pleasing to look at or experience) place.

Which makes me think Disneyland may not be too high on our list of places to go to...?

Or that we're thinking of doing a week long house rental next year to do US/IOA...and how glad will we be to get back "home" to WDW??

Or that the last time we went to Jamaica, DH and I both said, "Next year, we go back to WDW"

I know, comparing apples to oranges...both great, but oh so very different...

Anyway, glad you had a great trip!!:sunny:
