cancer and Disney

In June of this year, I had an emergency medical situation that required surgery that was considered life saving. Unfortunately, the root cause of the situation wound up being a stage IV (advanced) lung cancer (not a smoker).

We were scheduled for an August Disney trip. I had to cancel because I was not allowed to fly at the time. Also, I was undergoing chemo. I recently finished chemo. I am now on maintenance medicine (pretty strong stuff) but really doing pretty well.

I am allowed to fly again. If my health allows it (have to have a petscan in about a month to make sure the new medicine is working), I would like to go to WDW in February.

While I am doing well, I cannot disregard the serious nature of my disease. Everything in my response is pointing to me still having more time left, but just how much I don't know. I want this to be a really special vacation for us - to make up for having to cancel last summer's trip and to create great memories.

We just got past a terrible financial patch and things are going pretty well. However, my husband is self employed and there is always the chance that the money spigot will turn off again.

So the question I have is, since this will be a bucket list type of trip - do we splurge and stay at a Deluxe like the Poly (always wanted to stay there), stay at a less expensive Deluxe like WL (have stayed, loved it, but have concerns over current state of transportation), or split our stay between a moderate (CSR) and Poly/or YC? Originally, I was very happy to just stay at a place like CSR. However, they are completely booked for part of our vacation. Not sure that I want the hassle of a split stay, however. We are the type of family that likes to settle down.

I wouldn't even question the Poly decision, but it is expensive and it just gets me questioning the decision.

Sending you a  and wishing you all the best.

I would definetly look at the budget and see if you could swing the Poly. They have a 20% off code starting 2/21 and its also 30% off at Yacht and Beach and Wilderness Lodge. The code is N6P. You could call and see if your resort is available.

Also you could look at just your dh getting an annual pass and asking what the discounts are for the resorts during your dates. You dont need the pass right then etc.

I always joke that my dh treats me like the cancer princess. He would just do about anything for me too. I am sure your dh is like that too.

Also if your strength is an issue, I would think about renting a wheelchair or ecv. I dont care for the ecv myself and my dh doesnt mind pushing me in the wheelchair when I am tired. We rent one from Randys mobility when we go.

I hope you have a wonderful trip with your family.

Also if you plan on doing a lot of dining, you can also purchase the tiw card if you do get an ap. That would save money too and you can also use the ap for shopping and activities and tour discounts too..

Absolutely splurge on the POLY..
I had a similar trip last May.. It was my celebration trip.. Not only had we overcome some serious financial hardships, but I was diagnosed with a rare gallbladder cancer.. I had 3 surgeries in 3 weeks and it took me a good 5 months to feel whole again.. So, when planning my trip. i went all out.. I did a split stay, boardwalk and poly and half my trip I did deluxe dining.. it was perfect in every way!! I couldn't have asked for a better trip..

Those of us who have gone through cancer know that life is too short.. Do everything that you want to do, you wont regret it!

Thank you for your replies. I guess I didn't mention but I have a pin code with a slightly better discount than what is being offered publicly.

Now it seems to be between Poly and YC or a split stay. I REALLY like the tropical nature of Poly vs. YC, but YC is $500 cheaper for the week, has so much to do in the area and has the great pool. Still, I think if my husband okays I will do Poly. Just have always liked the feel to that place and have wanted to stay there. I need to really have that fantasy of feeling in a tropical environment and I won't get that with YC.

I hope both of you continue to do well.

 to you.

I think this is so highly personal. "I" would splurge, and enjoy every second of it. Cruising is my thing, and I have definitely overindulged in the past few years.
