Cancelling ADRs close to trip

I read this comment from a thread ... that people will cancel ADRs they don't want/need as they get closer to their trip.

What's the thinking behind this? Have people noticed this?

People may make more ADR's than they need far in advance then as their trip gets closer they finalize their familes plans. I presume at that point they start to trim off those ADR's they don't need. I am sure the rationale is "covering all their bases" because Aunt Jessica may want the family to go to MK instead of AK. Having ADR's at each ensures them the flexibilty to modify their daily plans. Screws the rest of us who don't do it but some are overkill on ADR's...Thankfully, Disney can limit some of this activity but nothing prevents someone from making an ADR at 1100 and 1:30 at the same restaurant...I think 2 hours is the window Disney sets limits at.

I've cancelled ADRs close to the trip but not for the reason the pp stated. Mine would be because we changed our plans for the day and thus changed to a different ADR or an ADR we may not have been able to previously get now opened up (or even a better time for us at the same place). I wouldn't make multiple reservations for the same meals, but I have changed up to the day before based on us changing our minds!

For people that book a vacation package the balance is due 45 days prior to arrival. Sometimes people end up canceling at that point due to lack of funds to pay off the vacation? Just a thought.

I agree on this point. I was able to get a Le Cellier at the 45 d mark. But I have had such trouble getting a SciFi ADR, a popular but nothing special kind of place.
