There is a possibility of having to cancel our trip that is scheduled for 4 days from now. We are staying on points borrowed from our next use year. If we have to cancel so close, do we just lose them or do they go into holding?

Fingers crossed we can make it...
Thanks for any help

You can cancel up to the day before and they will go into holding.

If you cancel at least the day before your check-in date, they go into holding. If you cancel on your check-in day, they are supposed to be lost, as point are considered spent on check-in day.

Thank you! I am hoping that it doesn't happen. It's a surprise for the kids and I really want to see their faces :)

If you do have to cancel, you have until the end of your current UY to rebook and use the points.

Hope it works out.

You have the technical answer, however, the reason you have to cancel might give you more options if you contact DVC. If it's due to the weather or a medical emergency, they'll likely waive the holding requirement.

I had to cancel the day of check in last year because of a medical emergency. I had to have an unexpected surgery. I called member services and explained the situation. I lost my points because it was the day of check in. Bummer but I had no control over the surgery or rules of DVC.

Good luck!

I had to cancel a trip to BLT due to Snowmageddon and inability to get out of town 4 years ago...my points went into holding...DVC was terrific, but did not waive the holding points requirement...

The airlines kept canceling my flights (3 separate times) at the last minute, so I kept thinking I could go...finally, at 8 p.m. the night before I was to leave, the airlines canceled (yet again)...MS was, of course, closed...but Disney (CRO) helped out and kept me from losing the points altogether...I positively celebrated getting the holding status! (Wound up being able to use the points for an unexpected trip 3 months later)...

So, do expect holding status (you might get lucky; sometimes DVC will waive a rule unexpectedly...but probably not if the cancellation is due to weather)...

Good luck; hope you can go!

That might have been around the time the official hurricane policy went into effect, before that all such issues were handled case by case. It's pretty likely that today the holding account status would be waived in this situation. Here's the disclaimer to the hurricane policy.
Note: This policy pertains to hurricane warnings only. Other weather advisory levels are handled on a case by case basis and Members should contact Member Services.

Had a similar occurrence today. Supposed to fly out in the am and our flights were just cancelled due to yet another Boston Blizzard. We will now arrive one day late. The 50 points were to be placed in holding but our use year is just about up and they would never have been used. DVC allowed us to bank them instead. I guess we were lucky

Last summer we had given our points to a friend. The day before he was to leave his sister had an allergic reaction to her chemo therapy and ended up pretty sick. Needless to say he called me up to cancel his trip. I called MS immediately and they were very understanding, placed the points back into our account and now he's using them in July.:cool1:
So you never know when some pixie dust will come your way.:wizard:
