Canceling for a family emergency today but have a future trip with borrowed points

I should know the answer to this question but I am probably not thinking straight right now. We have a trip planned for next week but 90 year old MIL is very ill. Points for this trip are from current April use year. However we have another trip planned for March 17 which we had to borrow points for. If I recall correctly my cancellation for this trip would put points in holding. Is there anyway I could use those points for the March trip or would I just lose the points. Not really a huge deal in the scheme of things but just wondering. TIA.

If I remember you can only book a new reservation using holding points 2 or 3 months prior to check in. Can you cancel the March reservation and rebook when allowed using the held points? Then you have to deal with the borrowed points.

I suggest that you call MS, explain the medical emergency and maybe get some magic. Much will depend on the CM that you talk to.

Sorry about your MIL.

Both the holding points and the borrowed points will expire at the end of your current use year, which will be 3/31/2017. So as Bill posted, it really won't help to use the holding points for your March trip.

Consider contacting one of the brokers to see if they will help you rent the holding points. You may not get much more than the dues, but if there is availability and the broker can find a renter, you will at least get something for them. Good luck.

Call and explain the situation. See if they'll swap out the points for your other trip without penalty and/or to allow you to bank them. If not and you're going to cancel anyway, you could rent or you could get the holding points then try to rebook the future trip with those points and at least bank any of those points if any are bankable. I'm sorry for your situation.

You can see if MS will help you out - it's hit or miss though. My mother passed away a week before a trip with her. I got a "have a magical day" after explaining and canceling and having points put into holding.

Sorry for your loss of your mother in law. I would check with MS to see if they would consider helping you out because of the emergency. But please do not get your hopes up.
