Cancelation question- need help!

Hi... unfortunately due to work promotion , we need to cancel /postpone our trip that is in a week... will those borrowed Points with Sept use year go into "holding"? We already know when we can return in 2.5 months
What are the rules and how do we cancel and rebook? Thanks so much...

They will go into holding. You can book with points in holding for trips that have a check in date within 60 days. If the trip you want to book is after September 1 then the borrowed Sept, points would be lost.

You can cancel online or call MS. The points will automatically go into holding regardless of which way you cancel. You would then need to book a new stay once your check in date is within 60 days.

Thank you.. can I use the "modify" on the dvc website? Instead of calling ? Do it in one transaction? Or do I cancel 1st? Sorry... never canceled a reservation in 12 years

Adding to the above: ree123 mentions "borrowed" points going into holding. Just to be clear, it makes no difference whether any of the points in the existing reservation are borrowed, banked or regular use year points. If you cancel now, all points in the canceled reservation will go into holding. None can be banked into the next use year and thus all will have an Aug 31, 2022 expiration date. And the points can be used to reserve a DVC Resort only via a reservation made 60 days or fewer from arrival date.

As to using the modify system online, it should allow the change if, and only if, the new start date you are seeking is 60-days or less from the date you go online to change the existing reservation. By what you mention, that does not appear to be possible: your current reservation starts in a week and you say you can go in 2 1/2 months, which means you would need to "modify" before your 60-day period for the new reservation begins.

You can’t modify if the stay you are wanting to rebook is 2.5 months out as in reality it cancels the existing reservation and creates a new booking. Your points would be in holding and the stay is more than 60 days out so the booking shouldn’t work.
