I've had many a flight I've booked well in advance cancelled, with us being put on a flight an hour before or after, all with no ill effect as they were all early flights, so we arrived in MCO or the connecting city a little before or after we'd planned. For our next trip I'm planning on taking the last flight out of AVP, a local port in PA and I'm concerned about what may happen if it gets dropped. Can they switch us to the next day? There are other flights before those I'm looking at, Delta and USAir are the carriers, so I could live with them bumping us to an earlier flight, but the last few times this has happened to me we got put on a later one. Are there rules for this? Also, I've got the USAir flight status page bookmarked and I can find the Delta one, but is there a site that lists the flight status of all carriers?

Thanks,
Bill From PA

While you can go to sites like Sidestep, BookingBuddy, and FareCrawler to find flights, I've never found a one stop status site for all airports. Some macro type sites you can use are:

http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/nemap.jsp

This will show you the status for AVP. To see each airline, the site gives you this link page:

http://www.fly.faa.gov/FAQ/Airline_Links/airline_links.jsp

One macro site that will at least show you the MCO end of the picture for arrival status is this site:

Back in August I originally scheduled a Song 5:50pm Friday flight out of Boston's Logan airport because it was cheaper than the earlier flights. They changed the time a bunch of times to 5:45, 5:30 and 5:35...then in November they cancelled it all together.

I checked the Song web site to see what flights they had available for that day. I found an earlier flight that I originally liked better than the 5:50 pm flight. I made a note of the 2:50pm flight number, the seats that were available on that flight and called the Song reservaton desk.

I spoke to an Agent about the flight cancellation and in less than 5 minutes he confirmed the new flight and reserved the better seats which were at that time more than 3 times what I originally paid, at no extra charge. Since then, they change the time by a few minutes every couple of weeks so I have to keep calling to reconfirm the seats.
If they cancel your flight I'm sure the same procedure would work for you.
Good luck,
Joe

If your flight is cancelled well in advance of your travel date, it is your choice of whether the replacement flight is before or after but it is the airline's choice of how far before or how far after. But the airline may not use capacity control (booking classes in the same cabin; fare buckets) in determining how far before or how fare after.
