Cancel one, book another question

I hope someone can give me some clarity on this: I have a reservation at my home resort in later November. I would like to cancel a portion of that one and book at another resort (not my home resort) at the 7 month window. I will need the points from the original reservation to book the new reservation. Is there any way to book the new resort before you cancel the old one? My fear is I cancel my original reservation--those days will immediately be gone (they are waitlisted now)--and when I go to book the "new" resort at 8am the day it opens I miss out on some days. My original plan was just to do this on the phone with member services, but getting through to them is a joke, and calling at 8am on the day my 7 months window opens will, in all likelihood, not get me through in time.

My question: can this be done online? Do I have to cancel my original reservation to have the points show up in my account, and book the "new" reservation at 8am online? It seems like I will be sweating out a period of 5-10 minutes at 8am hoping the new resort still has availability (it does as of now).

Any guidance/advice is much appreciated!

You could go ahead and setup your home resort reservation as a split stay at the same resort (in other words make separate reservations for each portion of your stay at the home resort). Then at the 7 month mark modify the reservation that has the dates where you would like to be at a different resort. If you are never able to get that second resort then member services can combine the reservations into one so you won't have to change rooms.

You won't be able to split it now that it's made....that would need to be done when you first book it. It is going to be risky to drop a part to pick up what you hope to get at 7 months so you just have to decide if it's worth trying for. If there is a backup option that you would be happy with then it could be worth a shot. There isn't a way to hold the room while you drop the nights that you currently have.

I believe a request can be made through Member Services to have the reservation split.

They can't (won't?) split reservations. If there happens to be availability it isn't a problem but it's still just done by dropping nights and creating a new 2nd reservation.

If it is not already booked as a split stay then you can not split it apart now. Neither can MS.

The only option is to cancel and then quickly try and book what you want.

One thing I was successful at once when I didn’t have enough to book it all without the cancel was to book the first two nights of the split..that’s all I had left for points...then dropped off the two from my trip at the end and then modified abs kept going like this. I was only doing 4 nights and fortunately it worked.

Now I always book as a split from the start.

Thanks for the clarification on the splitting of reservations. I was told in another thread that MS could do that. Now I know they can’t :-)
