perhaps you have seen this one already. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-11-...in-canberra-cbd-sets-new-world-record/5924274

here in Canberra we have a chap who wants to win the world record for the most christmas lights. For years he has had the display at his house, leading to the usual car parking mania. this year he has worked with the local govt to have it all set up in the pedestrian mall in the centre of the city. And he won his world record. He's raising money for Sids and Kids.

reminds of the Osbourne Family and the story of their lights - except without any disney characters.:thumbsup2

soooo... we went down to have a look last night - in the rain - yep there are a million light bulbs. Hard to believe on a Saturday night it would be empty - but there was barely anyone there. Must have been the rain. so it was missing the atmosphere of a squillion ppl jammed in like sardines. Also it was missing Goofy in a Santa suit flicking a giant light switch. And ..... it was really really plain. All they did was have strings in long rows. They made two longish tunnels which where just long strings of lights, which changed colours. There was about 10 light up deer standing around, 1 snowman and strings of lights hung on the carousel and around the adjoining shop awnings and windows. That's it - just rows of lights.
it was missing all spinning things, angels, reindeer, Santas, christmas trees - everything else the Osbourne lights have. they do play the same music as Disney - that pimped up version of the nutcracker suite. If you click on the ABC story, the very last GIF shows one of the tunnels - they had two - exactly the same, except the snowman in the other one.
Sooo.... disney wins again -IMHO.
I hope that in future years they mix it up a bit and put more interest in with shapes and figures. Still ... it is the first year and i am certain he has raised more money than ever before.
Merry Christmas everyone.

BTW: G-day Colin - I'm still dreaming of that Boardwalk balcony. One of my friends sat there every night - watching the Boardwalk and Epcot firewalks, enjoying room service. The view was magic. have a good summer!

Sounds like some of the street ones where they have a huge mix of dioramas, Santas and Rudolphs climbing over everything and things flashing and binging and popping is actually better that transferring it to the Mall? Still would be interesting to see!

I don't know if you ever saw the lights when the same person did them at his own home in Forrest? I thought that was more beautiful than the ones currently in Civic. While the ones in Civic are impressive and I like the coordination with the music, there were more trees and more garden at the actual house in Forrest so there was more detail to look at down low rather than just a big bank of lights. It is still fun though, when I went there were quite a few people by Canberra standards - it seemed like a lot of people in Canberra were just craving for evening entertainment at this time of year before the city empties.
