Canadians in Europe: credit cards or ATM?

Hi,

We're taking the Disney Magic EBTA in April and then going to spend a week in Rome right after. It seems to be the consensus among Americans that ATMs are the way to go. But for Canadians, what's the cheapest option in Europe? Use credit cards or take cash out of the ATM?

I know most credit cards charge 2% extra on the exchange rate; while ATMs may charge $5 per transaction.... But what comes out the cheapest in the long run?

Both work fine..really whatever is more convenient. Sometimes finding an ATM on your system can be tricky but not in the big cities such as Rome
