Can you use a printer that uses toner (instead of ink) for transfers?

Hi, Specifically, I'm asking about a Brother multi use color printer that uses toner instead of ink. I am really not familiar with this printer, but DH suggested I use it to print my transfers. It's the one they use for the family business. We have an HP Photosmart at home. I used it to print my transfers last year and they ran when we got them a little wet! Anything we print with this printer smears when we drop a bit of water on it. Does everyones stuff (word documents, pictures, etc) smear when wet?

This year I have Amy's transfers and I'm hoping they will make a difference, but I have a nagging suspicion that it may be the printer. Hubby says our specific HP seems to take a "runny" type of their ink (02).

Please help!

Once I went through the shirts I have made, I realize that the toner does fade or run. I would suggest using an inkjet printer.
