I'm trying to figure out the best deal for a spring break trip...March 26-April 4. If we do the kids play/stay free offer...can we upgrade those tickets to an AP?

I don't know for sure but I think you should be able to. Although it may be different since it's this particular deal....

One thing though, make sure you use them first. There's a difference in how things are calculated if you upgrade before using them.

Was able to do so in October after I used it.... it was quite an ordeal though. Did it at Epcots Guest relations

According to the official rules, they are Promotional Tickets, not Complimentary. And the chart of allowable upgrades states
Promotional Package Tickets such as children for free or 7 days for the price of four days are upgradable. Price bridging to the current gate price is required prior to performing an upgrade.
Just be sure that you use the tickets to enter a Park, then you can go to any ticket window or Guest Relations Office for the upgrade.

Are YES tickets upgradable as well?

Once issued, YES Program tickets cannot be upgraded or modified in any way. And also there are date validity restrictions.
