Can you take a carton of cigs. on the plane

My inlaws smoke & was wanting to take a carton of cigs with them on the plane. Can they do that? Also i know there is designated smoking areas in the airport. But my ? is are they allowed to bring a lighter or matched into the airport. So they can smoke while waiting on our plane.

You can bring cigarettes as carry on (or checked) luggage.
You can bring up to four books of matches as carry on items.
You can check an empty lighter as checked luggage.
You cannot bring lighter fluid on the plane in any location.
You cannot smoke the cigarettes on the plane.
To the best of my knowledge, the smoking area is OUTSIDE the terminal.

There is NO smoking area inside in the Orlando airport. Other airports vary by state and local law.

Because they must be at the gate at minimum 15-30 miniutes prior to departure (caries by carrier) and at Orlando they must allow minimum one hour to get through security, they will need to have a cigarette outside about 90 minutes prior to their flight time, and will not be able to smoke again until they land at their destination.

I've never had problems bringing a carton of smokes in my carry on. (For some reason I never put them in my checked baggage due to them getting stolen from my bag once.)
Note that matches and lighters are prohibited in checked bags.
If you're on a connecting flight, visit that airports website to see if they allow smoking.
Also on a side note, I've gotten some "free" lighters from TSA/airport employees that smoke outside the arrivals/departures level of the airport I'm arriving into. They seem to "collect" lighters and never mind me asking if they have a spare for my vacation.
