Can you rent a car from WDW resorts or do you have to get one from the airport?

We are planning to use magical express but I was wanting to rent a car to go shopping and stuff. Can you get a car from on site or do you have to get one from the airport?

At one time you used to be able to from Swan or Dolphin. I am not sure if you still can, but I am sure you can check and see. The other choice is at one of the hotels Lake Buena Vista Just outside of DTD. You can take bus to DTD then walk to it. Its not very far, about 15 min walk.

There's two Alamo locations in Disney and they have convertibles.
Just go to the alamo.com and put in Orlando in locations search.

National is also at this location. I always pickup/return to the Dolphin and it's been quick and easy.

There are other rental companies located at some of the DTD hotels - Dollar is one.

The Dolphin's hours are more limited than the Car Care Center, so that might affect your decision. I think they close before 5:00 p.m.

National code ORLR13 and Alamo code ORLR74. Note the rental desks are located in the Dolphin Resort.

Downtown Disney Resort on Hotel Plaza:

Grovsvenor , Doubletree Guest Suites, and Hotel Royal Plaza: Budget Rental Car - Code MO3 (I think this is the code for all three resorts. Check to see what resort you would pick the car up at.)

The Hilton has an Avis desk. It's code is LB3

Holiday Inn in the Disney World Resort has Dollar on-site. Code MCOS01

Buena Vista Palace Hotel & Spa houses another Alamo site code ORLR73 and National code is ORLR03

okay, I'm a newbie
To show just how much I do not know I am going to ask my question...Can I get to any of these locations with Disney transportation???

You can get to the Swan/Dolphin using Disney bus transportation or just walk from Epcot or Disney Studios. The others are in DTD so you can take a Disney bus to DTD and then walk to these hotels. The last one is outside DW proper and you would need to call them for a ride or use a taxi.
