My sister-in-law and brother-in-law are going to Disney for the first time in a couple of weeks. They are only doing the QSDP so my DH and I booked them and the kids a reservation at Chef Mickeys. We think the kids will love it. This is going to be our Christmas present to them. We planned on giving them a gift card to pay for the meal. Will a Disney gift card be OK to use?

We do that every trip - we ask for gc's for b-days, Christmas, etc. and use them for our spending money on trips. We always do ddp, but used the cards for tips and DH will sometimes get an app and/or a beer. Never had any trouble using them at any restaurant.

Yes, you can pay with a gift card at Chef Mickey's. There are a few restaurants not operated by Disney that don't take them (at the Swan/Dolphin and Downtown Disney) but Chef Mickey's will be fine.

When doing this, do you just give the waiter/waitress your room key to deduct the meal credits and have the tip taken off the gift card? And this works out ok? We have 2 nights room only before starting a package with DlxDDP and I'm considering getting a gift card with enough on it to pay for the room only meals OOP and use the rest for tips while on the plan ;); but I've never used a gc for tips so I was wondering how this worked :confused3.

What about the World Showcase restaurants (e.g., Mexico) that aren't owned/operated by Disney? Can you use gift cards there? Thanks.

As far as I can tell you can use the gift cards at any TS inside the parks. It's just outside the parks, dealing with non-Disney-operated restaurants that you have to ask, because some will accept Disney gift cards and some won't.
