Can you identify this DIS Dog? *Another DIS Dog drawing added on page 6!*

I knew it was Mabel instantly. The picture is very well done. She has caught the feeling in the eyes so nicely!

I can tell you who destroyed Lauri's self esteem when it comes to her artwork.

She was married once before I met her. She married her high school sweetheart and somewhere along the 10 yr marriage he became very abusive to her both mentally and physically.

He made a special effort to make sure he took away any ounce of pleasure she got from her artwork and to make her feel like it didn't even deserve the paper it was drawn or painted on.

The straw that broke the camel's back was the day Lauri did the painting below - she loved to paint wolves because she thinks they are beautiful and have such soulful eyes. She had scanned the painting into her computer to have a copy and had it on the screen. He knew damn good and well she painted it because 1) the subject matter 2)she still had the paints out and 3) umm.. she signed it. He took one look at it and said "Who painted that? That is horrendous. Whoever painted that sucks."

Lauri has not picked up a paint brush since that day and that was 1998. I've gotten her to pick up her pencils again - but I don't know if I can get her painting.

Anyway - here is the painting that her ex said was so hideous:

OMG...that is a BEAUTIFUL picture. That story just makes me :furious:

You tell Lauri that as soon as I saw her drawing I knew it was Mabel!! :thumbsup2

And you tell her that I think her rendering is FABULOUS!!! :goodvibes :)

Please tell Lauri that her portrait of the wolf is just breathless. She totally caught the untamed feeling of the subject and just like the real thing, it eyes make you catch your breath. What her first husband did was totally selfish and cruel. Anyone can see the jealousy and cruelty in his treatment of her. The fact that she quit is not only denying herself, but others of her talent. :sad2:

Please, please keep on her to startup again. :flower2: :flower2:

Yeah, it upsets me too. Every man in her life has beaten her down at one point. Abusive father, her brothers constantly gave her grief and told her she was worthless.

Even her uncle hurt her. Seems like there is one person in every generation of that family that is an artist. He was the one in that generation and was a commercial artist/art director who did things like covers of Time Magazine. Lauri is the artist in her generation. Seems she was the first female though and it made a difference. Plus Lauri didn't go to college so she was deemed "worthless" as an artist. :( I'm sorry but true artistic talent cannot be taught, you are born with it. :sad2:

Quick weird story that Lauri's mom told me. Lauri used to paint in acrylics a lot and had painted a picture of a rose, but it was unusual in that it was laying down on a table, not sitting in a vase or just a closeup of the bloom like the usual rose paintings you see. Anyway, her brother (Lauri's artist uncle) was driving through from Florida (they had a summer home outside of Disney) and he had picked up a few paintings that his father (Lauri's grandfather who was the artist in that generation) had done that his cousin had and wanted to get rid of. Why, I have no idea, considering her grandfather has paintings in museums.

Anyway, he brings the paintings in and Lauri's mom almost fainted. There in the stack was a painting of a rose laying on a table - same colorings (she said it was a mauve color which made it even more unusual) and looked practically identical. :scared: She couldn't believe her eyes. She brought out the painting that Lauri had done just a few weeks earlier and compared it and it was uncanny. Keep in mind, Lauri's GF died 15 yrs before she was born and this painting was states away and nobody knew it existed.

Unfortunately, the uncle wasn't impressed by the eerie similarity and wouldn't even let Lauri and her mom have the painting - even though he had stacks of them in his garage that he wasn't doing anything with and Lauri and her mom had a whopping ONE of his paintings to remember him by. :sad2:

Her talent is amazing! :goodvibes I love the picture of Mabel, but the wolf is fantastic! :thumbsup2

I also knew that was a portrait of Mabel as soon as I saw it!!! I don't know who is Mabel's "person"...but I knew Mabel!! ;)

If Lauri ever gets the urge to do a pic of a basenji, I would LOVE it!!! There aren't too many pics of them or even dog related stuff with them on it...so it would be a TREASURE indeed!

Lauri did a FABULOUS job with both the pencil portrait and the painting...hopefully she won't let her past "critics" stop her...WE'RE the only "critics" that matter now!! ;) :teeth: And we think she's AMAZING!

Anyone that wants her to give it a try to draw their dog, just post a clear, good sized picture to this thread (at least the size of Mabel's puppy pic) and I'll save it to our computer and show Lauri the "requests" she has lined up. I'm sure that will make her feel good. :)

Just remember, it might take a while for her to get to all of them. I don't know if she can handle more than a couple of drawings a week with the joints in her hand and wrist flaring like they are. But knowing her, she'll give it her best shot grumping the entire way that she draws like a kindergartener and can't believe anyone likes them.. :rotfl: I know, it's not really funny but listening to a redhead sitting in bed covered in poodles trying to draw while a Tibetan Spaniel keeps trying to take her gum eraser while she is mumbling to herself about anything in particular can be a funny sight. :teeth:

When I saw this picture, I got goose bumps! I would be proud to have one of her drawings hanging on my wall! ::yes:: She is very talented, and it sounds like she is very lucky to have you to help her see her talent, and convence her not to give it up.

Nope Lauri, please don't give it up, your work is absolutly beautiful!

We want to see more! :jumping2:

Absolutley beauiful! And she paints/draws one of my favorite creatures ever! She makes them seem so real, please whatever you do, do not let her give this up, she is truley talented!!

I think the picture is beautiful. LOL, Lisa and Mabel must be excited!! :goodvibes

I've had an idea for a portrait which I've heard may be difficult to do. I would like to have one done of me with my 6 German Shepherds - five of whom are in Doggy Heaven. My first two dogs would really be a challenge since the pictures I have of them are from 1960-70s and aren't so great. I would also like to somehow leave room for other dogs to be added in the future. See if Laureen has any ideas about that and let me know. Thanks!

I am a wolf nut - lots of photos of them and I researched and studied them extensively for a class in grad school. That wolf painting is stunning. I love it.

Oh my goodness, both are absolutely gorgeous!! I've scrolled down umpteen times to look at the wolf! There's something about him that is completely captivating. The eyes are incredible! Her ex is an idiot. Sorry. That's not very nice, but what he did was just beyond cruel. :(

...and the story of the rose paintings! Wow! Just kind've leaves me speechless! That's amazing! I would be absolutely honored to have her do a picture of my little Minnie Mouse, but I don't want to overwhelm her. I'll post her here, but no pressure okay? Only if the mood strikes. :)

Sorry it's so big. I don't remember how to resize pics here.

if you are interested I do not have a dog --- but I do have a cat :cat: a cat that is unique looking

Having seen these pictures for QUITE a while in the Pet Calendar...I know that's Mabel's puppy photo. Nice. :thumbsup2

Okay, DW MeanLaureen used to do a lot of drawing and painting before she got sick 6 yrs ago. She hasn't picked up a pencil and drawn in quite some time due to the pain in her hands - she even has difficulty writing.

She was wondering the other day if she could still draw. She used to do portaits of people's dogs for them and had even done a portrait of the author Patricia Cornwell's 2 Dacshunds.

Since she loves to draw dogs she thought that a good subject matter to try out would be one of the many adorable signature pictures of DISer's dogs.

Unfortunately Lauri, who is very hard on herself, isn't happy with how the picture turned out and is sure it is horrible and beyond recognition. She thinks that the AOSD has destroyed her ability to recreate images with accuracy. I think she is just being really hard on herself, especially since this is her first attempt to draw in years. She thinks I'm lying to her to be nice and not hurt her feelings.

So, I made a bet with her. I'm posting the drawing to see if anyone can recognize which DIS dog this is. If you can't, I lose and I have to shave off my mustache :scared1:  :scared: (man she nags me to get rid of that thing!) :sad2:

Here you go... guess that DIS dog. Please? LOL

When Spider heard Laurie needed close-ups, he ran and got his favorite hat and sat real still. He sends Miss Laurie and all her babies a few of his best kisses.
