My son is going to be moving to Chicago as a new United pilot. We know nothing about Chicago. Hope you can help. He will work out of O'Hare
and needs to find an apt. to share with other new pilots (a crash pad as he describes it). I would like him to be in a good part of town with easy access to the airport. Where should he be looking in the Chicago area? Could you share zip codes for those places as well. Thank you to all who respond... :wave2: he is single......

Area's in Chicago-area - near O'Hare (I'm assuming O'Hare) which are good (in fact perfect for a young man)

Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Mt Prospect - (north and west)

Elmhurst, (south and west)

Depending on his age and marital status - I think he should be Downtown. Remember just because he works at the airport, doesn't mean he has to live at the airport. He can take te Blue Line train right to O'Hare about a 22 minute commute; You mentioned that he has roomates - they should be able to afford the rent in the City. I for one, would not want to be a single person in the suburbs.

My son is 24 and yes he looks like he just got out of high school. Have you flown those commuters where the pilots look like they just got out of high school?......I have :rotfl: But I assure you if you ever get to fly with him, you have a very responsible, college educated (Embry Riddle) and serious young pilot on board.

What kind of rent are we talking for a downtown apt in a safe area?

Does this blue line to the airport run out to the suburbs?

Thank you both again for your help. :wave2:

You can go to the Chicago Tribune and look at apartment rentals there. (I believe you have to click on Real estate and then on rentals). Then you can get an idea. You can search the city as well as the surrounding suburbs.

I think I agree that downtown would be more fun. But pricey if he's right in downtown. He could try a "trendy" neighborhood, like Wicker Park (which is by the Blue line train which goes to O'hare), Bucktown, or Andersonville. Maybe someone else has more recommendations. :)

I will give him the info to search. We are so clueless. New pilots don't make a whole lot so there will be roommates.

Anyone else have any other ideas to add? I really appreciate any response :wave2:

You can also try apartments.com and search zip codes 60610 (Streeterville) and 60611 (River North). Those are for downtown Chicago and will give you a pretty good idea of price range as far as rents go. For a single person (even a single person on a budget ;) ) this would be THE place to live.

especially for the zips codes. So many sites ask for zip codes. What would make this area the place to live? we will search all the suggestions.

It is so hard to move to an area the size of Chicago when you are clueless.

Any other ideas, anyone? :wave2:

DH and I lived there before we were married and it was right in the middle of all the action. Right near Navy Pier, North Pier, nightclubs on Rush Street, wonderful restaurants, theatre, shopping, and the beach. If we didn't have kids, it's probably where we'd be now.
