Some friends of mine are visiting Disney next summer with their children and mother-in-law. The kids are wanting to eat at Chef Mickey's with the Grandmother. The parents are wanting to know if they can go to the restaurant and help the grandmother with the kids, and then go eat somewhere else as a 'date' night while the grandmother takes the kids back to the resort. I think I remember reading somewhere that Disney will charge an 'entertainment' fee at character meals for the people not eating. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Unfortunately no. There have been occasional reports of this happening but it's certainly not the norm. The official rule is that everybody at the table must pay. If they want to do this, they should be prepared to pay. If they get really lucky then maybe they'll get a discount on the price of the people who don't eat, but I wouldn't count on it. Even people who physically can't eat for medical reasons (as in all their nutrition is a medical liquid fed through a tube) have been charged full price.

No, I believe they will have to pay in full for the meal, even if they don't eat anything.

Used to be an "entertainment fee" for those who wouldn't eat, but I suppose it was too difficult to "police" the tables and make sure those who did not pay for food didn't eat anything. The current general rule is full price if you are at the table.

Outside CRT (where you have to pay in advance for all who go in), are there any Character Meals that are not all you can eat, or set price?

I can't think of any, but if there are, somoene would be able to order just a drink or appetizer, I suppose.

All character meals are all-you-care-to-eat pricing.

1) Yes, you can go to a character meal and not eat.
2) But, you will still be charged the full price.
3) As mentioned above, ALL character meals are buffet or all-you-can-eat.
4) Otherwise, people would come in and order ala carte to get away cheaply.
5) Definitely not the Disney way to make money.
6) After all, if ala carte, how could they make $45-$55 on a Castle meal?

Remy isn't a costumed character and he doesn't appear all the time - part of the day Monday-Sat and not at all on Sundays. Chefs is not considered a character meal because of Remy. It's more an a la carte restaurant with a little bonus thrown in if you're there at the right time.
