Can you explain the "book extra days then drop them later" strategy, please?

I keep reading about how sometimes if you need a certain room on certain days it doesn't show up when you look for, say, 3 days, but if you put in for 5 days it shows up.

Can someone explain the strategy for looking for rooms this way? Is it trial and error? Does it need to be 3 - 5 - 7 day look ups or what? Is it different for online vs. calling CRO?

I am desperate for a Beach Club Villas Studio for the night of Aug 4th! I have a DVC ressie for the 3-5-6-7 (S-Tu-W-Th), but I am missing the 4th! It will just be me and DDs 5&11, so I hate to book somewhere else for that one night and do the checkin-checkout-checkin-checkout-checkin thing. We are already moving to AKL for F-Sa and then AKV Su-F the following week.

If anyone can give some help or information (or inspiration!!!), all will be appreciated!!

Sometimes one night is just not available, it really doesn't make much sense but it happens. Before I would move twice, I would book something else for the first 2 nights and then the last where you want. You might want to keep checking as well. Sometimes rooms are cancelled. Did you speak with a CM or just try on line? The CMs are always so helpful when trying to arrange dates etc. Good Luck.

I know I can't explain it!

We wanted the Poly during the new promo Disney is offering. It wasn't available. But..... if I put in the date I wanted to check in staying for 8 nights instead of 5, tahdah....Poly was available. I called and booked it. The next day I called and shortened our stay to what we really wanted. I can't explain why (and the original CM booking it was very difficult and argued with me), but now we have our 5 nights at the Poly.

That happened with us last year. I had to book a day longer than we wanted to get our reservation. I don't know why. It even stumped the CM that booked it for me. Thanks to the Dis I knew this could happen.

So...are your other nights booked with points and you're trying to pay cash for the 4th only? Are you trying to use a code?

Yes, with DVC points for all the other BCV & AKV nights. For the 4th I would love a code, but I would pay rack rate just to get the room for the night! I have tried rack, end-of-summer special, AAA, AP, DVC rack, DVC discount - there is just no BCV studio room to be had!

That does make thing a little trickier...especially when you would like to link the resv. so you don't have to change rooms.

Just keep checking online and look for any window of days around the date you need. If anything comes up, book it and then call back a couple of days later and tell them you need to drop the nights you don't need. Better ask about penalties though as you're awfully close to your check-in date.
