Can you do online check in if you are not a skymiles member?

I'm trying to see how you would do online checkin if you do not have a skymiles (Delta) card-Is online checkin only for skymiles members?

Why not just sign up for SkyMiles?

You can sign up and instantly have a Skymiles number and then call Delta 1-800-221-1212 and ask them to link your number with your current reservation. Then you can go online and sign in to view your reservation and when it is time you can print boarding passes at home.

I know this first hand because I have a Skymiles number but my daughter did not and I wanted her to get credit for the miles we were about to travel. I called them and they told me to apply for her number online and then call them back and they would enter her number on our reservations and I checked shortly after and she was all set. So remember if more then 1 person is flying you can/should get a number for each of them.
I could of printed her boarding pass without her having a number because the reservation is in my name but she would of missed out on 2500 miles and the 1000 bonus miles for checking in online.
