Can you bring a metal detector on board?

I am thinking to get a metal detector for my teenage son for Christmas. Will he be allowed to use it on Cococay? Or even allowed to bring aboard?

It is not on the restricted list. However, some have reported that local agencies do not permit use. I would not want to bring it along with limit stateroom space as it is. There are too many other diversions also.
