DD has eaten them on a number of occasions without a problem as long as they're sliced. Guess we've been lucky.

I don't think the only issue with caramel is the wires breaking. It's because it sticks to the brackets, can't be cleared out with a regular toothbrush and will cause cavities that you won't know about until the brackets come off.
