I received an email today from a guy who has just started working in our division. I really have no daily contact with him and only know him to say hello.

The email was an invitation to his wedding and reception sent to many people at the college (including the president, the department chairs, and the dean). My first thought was...well, that's kind of weird, I don't really know this guy but maybe he doesn't have a lot of friends or something. He's worked at the college in other departments for a few years. I was feeling a little sad for him until I read the last line of the email, then I was shocked! It said, "Your presence is needed and your presents are wanted!"

Does anyone else think this is the tackiest thing ever?

I think it is kind of rude. Maybe he was trying to be funny!

I was kind of feeling sorry for him until I read the last line! That is incredibly tacky, and I would most definitely send my regrets.

WOW--that's a new one--I'd go to the wedding and tell him "my presence is your present"

My husband gets invited to a lot of things generic wedding invitations, etc. Now it might be OK to put something like that note at the bottom of close friends who understand your humor. But, it's very tacky to put that at the bottom of a generic invitation. It makes it look like he only wants your gift.

I bet he's never been so popular (infamous) in his whole life.;)

:eek: :p:p I agree with Madi...maybe ok to send to friends who might get that you're being "tongue in cheek" about the "presence not presents" note tacked onto so many wedding invites these day ...but NOT on a generic e-mail sent to people who barely know you!:p:p

I can't believe this was serious. But if it was...yes, please send to etiquettehell...I want to show my friends.;)

::yes:: Very Tacky indeed.

Ok, well, I'm going to have to check out etiquette hell. This is certainly one for the record books!
