I KNOW there are alot of you on this board who know about cameras because I have seen your photos ;) Anyway I am looking to upgrade and need some serious advice. I am currently using a point and shoot (Canon) because my previous Kodak was just not working for me (or at all sometimes!). So I'm looking for something more middle of the road. I do not want to have to take lessons to learn how to use it :rotfl: But I want something that I can have some more control over my picture taking while using. I have a couple of friends locally that can help me once I decide what I want but they are strictly Nikon users and I want some different opinions. THANKS!

There are generally two camps, Canon and Nikon. That being said, Sony, Olympus, and several others make excellent entry level DSLRs.

You cannot really go wrong with either the Canon or Nikon entry level DSLRs. I am biased towards the Canon, I started with a 40D and then bought a 7D a couple of years ago. I just think they are easier to use, the controls seem to be set up a little better. The Nikons seem to have slightly better dynamic range though.

So there are pros and cons for each, I would make a matrix of what you really want out of a camera and let that help you decide. Read reviews too, thousands of people have and are going through the same thing you are right now.

Ease of use
Cost
Overall features-ISO, battery life, focal points
Accessories
Etc.

It saddens me that you do not want my opinion... :confused3

I LOVE my Nikons (been through three of their P&S and on my second DSLR)

My last three trip reports were shot with my D600 body, and my last two with my FAVORITE lens ever... Nikon's 24mm f/1.4

My previous two trip reports were with my D80 and either the 50mm f/1.4 or my 18-200 f/3.5-5.6
