Hi. This is it – you’ve either stumbled upon a Pre-trip Report that you can totally relate to as a middle-aged parent, or you are thinking – man, I am closing this thread and going back to the list for something more my style!

So, if you’re still here…maybe you’re looking for a family PTR. Well, this one’s gonna disappoint you. I did a family PTR this year, then a TR of our trip in June (and it was a long one), and short note: it was a great trip to see my BFF and her family at WDW and take my only-child’s friend with us so that she had someone (teenager) to relate to. Yep, that one’s over, and this is not a repeat of that. So, buh-bye if you were looking for a fun-filled family infomercial on how to plan for your WDW trip.

Not that it isn’t fun – it so is. But that isn’t what this PTR’s about.

So – who’s left? Ah…well! (looks around) Okay, now that we’ve gotten rid a large percentage of PTR fans that are looking to mooch off of someone else’s ideas because they are planning for their trip and want to bolster their own planning itinerary (hey, I’ve done it…not being sarcastic), I’ll let you who are left in on one of the most amazing things to happen to a middle-aged, stuck in a daily grind job parent, who doesn’t see a vacation with the entire family in the immediate budget or future.

You recall I said we went in June…June 2010, right? Yeah, I mean, a lot of people do go on vacations once in a year. And, my family has been to WDW four times…I think. It could be five, but I’ve not been fanatical enough to count, and since my family really could care less about pictures and blogging, I’m left to my own devices to carve out some kind of meaningful mementos from our trips. And we’ve been somewhere in the neighborhood of nine cruises…for some reason, my daughter knows this exact number.

Of course, most of these vacations came before the Tremendous Depression. Or, whatever they’re calling it. But that thing put a tremendous damper on our lifestyle.

Okay…if you managed to stick around after all my ramblings, perhaps I’ve kept the most faithful of my readers. Or, none of them, and now I’m relying on my BFF’s notoriety on the Dis Boards to gather some readers for her sake, for whenever she jumps in.

…in either case:

My name is Vickie. I am 42, live in Texas, and that is all that is really necessary to keep you enthralled. :lmao: My DH is Robert, and DD is Jordan Claire. But they are not much in my PTR. ;) Here we are:

39282_1651766260676_1432598975_31779897_1258782_n.jpg

And this PTR is one of great anticipation on my part, and hopefully on the part of my BFF, because:

WE ARE GOING TO WDW TOGETHER WITHOUT OUR FAMILIES! :cheer2::dance3::cheer2:

Okay, I know…it’s been done. But not by me. I’ve been married since ’93, and unless I went on a business trip (military: TDY), I don’t really go anywhere on my own. I really don’t go out much at all without it being a family trip. It’s not that I’m…ya know…some kind of trapped housewife, or something…it’s just that my family & I have always loved to be together, and my husband really wants me with him all the time. We have this … symbiotic relationship…

Yeah, some of you probably have some other ideas, but really. We rarely go to the store without each other. I find shopping alone almost impossible (okay, this does sometimes get annoying).

So. This is just the start of the fact that this is an amazing trip. The other part of this (and I’ll get into this more), is that my BFF, Melissa, and I have been friends since our freshman year in high school. We’ve kept in touch for all these years, and I wouldn’t trade her for anyone – she has a heart of gold. But when we were teenagers…you know…before we were dedicated to anybody but ourselves…remember then?

Remember cruising down the drag? Remember flirting? Remember going to the theme parks and riding rides until you thought you’d be sick, but there was no one to tell you NOTHIN’?? Remember when YOU were just YOU, instead of spouse, or mom, or dad, or sibling, or offspring? That in-between time, when you and a friend and what you wanted to do was paramount? And you had the cash – woops. Okay – see…now I got some cash. Well, not a lot. But you’ll see how this goes. You get where I’m goin’, tho?

This, my friends, will be a BFF trip…a trip back in time, but actually being held in Feb 2011. We are going to rock the World (like it’s 1999?), stay up late (be good, yes!), do what we want, when we want, how many times we want, until one of us says, boo. We’ll have to do some rules, I think…? We’ll see. :)

Up next, let’s go back in time!

Notoriety? :rotfl2: I'm not that well known, but since living here in Florida I have been very fortunate to get to meet a lot of wonderful people from here on the Dis. :wave2: Hi! I'm Vickie's BFF, Melissa. If you look in my sig you will see my link to my ongoing TR as a Disneyworldholic for my last yearin Florida. "Last year?" you may ask, the hubby is in the military and his tour here will end next summer. :sad1:

I am so looking forward to this trip in February. I have tried to get Vickie to dump her family :lmao: and go with me for a couple of years now. Don't get me wrong, I love my family and hers, but we haven't had a girls weekend, since college I guess. Geez, that was a long time ago.

Here is a recent pic of me and my family taking at MNSSHP

Well, hopefully we will get some more followers on this crazy adventure.

YAY!! :banana::banana:

I remember reading so many other TRs where the women (who are usually the planners, and the ones to go commando, and the ones who are the most excited about going to WDW) cannot get the family mood together at times, they don't get to do what they really want to do because they are trying to make everyone happy, etc. My comment to one of them was: too bad we can't just take clones of ourselves, so that we can enjoy the World just as we want! :lmao: Not possible, granted, but having a BFF who loves to do similar things comes pretty close!

:cool2: It will be awesome.

HOORAY!!!!!!!! You know I am on board....I better be after all the begging I did!! :lmao:

BTW....great start! :yay: I was so excited that I did not read anything first!! I knew the two of you had known each other for a long time...but since 9th grade! That is simply awesome!!! What fun to let loose and go back in time....hmmmm...got me to thinking, will it be like jumping into the time machine hot tub and waking up in an 80s nightmare of leggins, neon colors, and big hair? Oh, I loved the 80s!!

Oh, yes, the 80s!!

Now, if we could just have the BODIES we had back in the 80s! :lmao: That's really the missing link...hmmm.... ;)

Yes, we've been friends a while...and now, the story!

We were in band together in the 9th grade...beginning of the year. It was one of our first band trips as freshmen, and as we loaded on the bus, Melissa asked to sit beside me -- and we struck up a conversation. Neither of us knew too many people, and we quickly hit it off and became friends.

It's funny how some things are so crystal-clear in your mind, when so many other things fade and go away...I think if you tell the stories, they stick with you, and this was one of my favorite stories to tell. She played the clarinet, I played the flute. Throughout high school, we remained friends, even though "best friends" might have been other people at times, we always got along and I can't remember never getting along. Melissa is just one of those people who never tries to offend, even when she's angry -- and figuring out how angry she is, is really hard to do, because she's usually half-laughing about the situation! :upsidedow

We had a lot of great times -- here's a picture of us at her dad's house, with her in the middle, me on the right, and another friend, Tawyna, on the left. I don't know what I'm talking about...

We were in the band rifle corps together, and she was our captain. She had a great knack for hearing a song and putting together a great routine -- with no real training at all. She would see it in her mind's eye, make it up on the weekend (after having recorded the band on a cassette and playing it on her boom-box over & over outside), and show it to us the next week. Within the next week, we'd be marching out on the football field at the game, doing the routine she'd made up for us.

I have a picture I'm going to insert here...later.

As for parks: I had been to Six Flags over Texas in Dallas in middle school once, and then our ...junior year?...we went to Houston to AstroWorld as a band trip (for a contest). That was the first time Melissa & I had been to a park together, and then later we went to Six Flags on a road trip while in college. (isn't that right?) That's when we both learned we were "getting old" -- one particular rollercoaster gave us BOTH a headache!!

Okay -- after high school, we had that time period of -- freedom!! I wasn't kidding about cruising the drag...we did that for a while, and then both of us drifted apart for a while as I was in college (and going to clubs), while she waited a year. As it was, we went to the same college there in our hometown, and graduated around the same time -- actually she graduated a bit earlier (remember the club stuff? yeahh....) with a degree in two subjects, which was pretty impressive.

I had met my husband while in college, and when I graduated, I went into the Air Force; Melissa met her husband at the store she worked at (her stepdad owned) -- he was in the Air Force. So, naturally, it was pretty easy for us to keep in touch! Isn't she a beautiful bride? I don't know what I'm thinking... :confused3

Over the years, we've kept in touch and visited each other; when we were in San Antonio, they visited us and we went to Six Flags Fiesta Texas together...here's us in South Carolina when we went to see Melissa & Jacob, while her DH was deployed:

1079030029_83d4m-M.jpg

And, of course, they visited us while we were in Virginia, and we went to Busch Gardens together! Okay, there was a picture, but tech issues abound, and I'll post it later...

So...how did we get on this Disney kick? Neither of us grew up really even thinking about Disney....more to come!

:woohoo:

Thought I would catch up, waiting on a friend to go shopping and eat lunch. Great little chapter on us Vickie.

I still remember that first meeting, and I don't even think it was a band trip, just a ride over to the football stadium. Funny how things work.

As you can probably tell, Vickie is the writer and great at expressing. No matter what I say, don't feel like it will really show how great of a friend Vickie has been or what a great person she is.

Vickie, did you post pics from my FB page? They aren't showing up, but it may be because I have them for only Friends to see. I'll upload them to my Smugmug and repost. Duck, are you able to see them?

That rollercoaster that gave us both headaches was the Giant. Love that coaster, but any wooden coaster now gives me a headache. I still remember asking a cashier where we could find some aspirin and she just looked at us funny. We told her we were old and needed some.

I'll let Vickie continue the story of how we got so hooked. But I will tell you, I'm thinking of suing her for treatments costs due to the WDW withdrawals I will be going through when we have to leave Florida.:rotfl:

Just kidding! :goodvibes

great start!!!!

Mel!!! I truly see jacob in that pic!!!!!!!! Lovin it:hug:

and No this is the only pic I can see :(

Ok, I'll upload those others. But could you see the one of Vickie and her family?

Yes, I truly believe the rollercoaster headache was when we finally understood that we were, indeed, on our way to "growing too old"! And, of course, we were (by today's standards!!) still pretty darn young, so that lady was having a hard time trying to figure out why two young women both had debilitating headaches from the same ride!! :rotfl:

Sorry I've been MIA -- but now, we're getting to the "hook up"! :rolleyes1

Everyone has a starting point with Walt Disney World, or DisneyLand, for those lucky enough to have been there. My DH had been there before (in a previous life), but I really didn't have a clue. We had had season passes to Busch Gardens when we lived in Virginia, and I think that's really what we missed when we finally moved to New Mexico.

Actually, my first day of work at my new job in Clovis, NM, was at Cannon AFB. I had to in-process to the base, which was a bunch of paperwork as they figured out who I was and where I belonged. I was the only one up that day, in our Temporary Living Facility (apartment), and we had arrived the day before. I had my blues on, and was walking through the living area into the kitchen, when something on the news caught my eye.

Huh -- some stupid idiot had crashed his plane into a building. The commentators were talking about it, with a live picture on the screen, when suddenly -- another plane flew into the building beside it. The hair flew up on the back of my neck, and I ran back into the bedroom to get my hubby up. He was still bleary-eyed when I left for my appointment.

Sorry, but -- WDW is really around the corner.

Well, needless to say, people were talking about it in the room I was starting my paperwork in, when all of a sudden, the person in charge announced that the base was shutting down. We all looked around, incredulous...security was raised to Delta, and no one was easily getting on or off the base. Regular ops was shut down...and we were sent home shortly after that.

As you well know, airline flights were not easily obtained for a while after that, so as we got settled into our new residence and the new Post-9-11 world, we realized just how land-locked we were in a rugged New Mexico territory. There were no amusement parks -- okay, there was a little kiddie park with 1930's amusement rides -- there was really nothing within a 4 hour drive of where we lived.

The nearest airport was 2 hours away, in Lubbock, Tx. So, the next year, when we decided to take a vacation, we decided to make it count. My DH was getting a little extra $ from an inheritance, so I started looking...

I don't know why I settled on WDW -- and specifically, a Land & Sea vacation. At the time, I was more excited about the parks, because we missed parks so much. So, we started off looking at the resorts, because the resort was the driver of the whole deal. We didn't know hoot from holler about any of those resorts...we didn't know what a moderate was, or a value, or anything. Well, we kind of figured out the value, of course, but the moderates & deluxes both looked really great. We closed our eyes...and picked the Poly.

Well, booking the Poly gave us a balcony on the ship, and we figured that we really kind of wanted a balcony, even though we'd never been on a cruise ship before.

I'm sorry to go into all this...but you have to realize that we knew nothing, really. We were babes in the woods.

So much so, that my DH booked the airlines himself...booked multiple airlines for each stage (Lubbock, Dallas, Atlanta, Orlando) -- and our luggage was lost, we arrived too late for ME, and I was pissed.
:rotfl: We had missed a whole day of WDW. And we had bought it! Four days of parks, and now we only had 3...grrrr....

Well, the following day, we had a character breakfast...that almost made up for it...!

Really, we had a great time. We did a lot of characters, which meant we missed a lot of the parks, and before we knew it, we were boarding our bus for the cruise.

Can I just say: Do not begin a cruise with Disney. You're starting at the top. :sad2: You will be disappointed with all other cheaper cruises...do a Carnival cruise, then do Disney. OMGosh, but we were spoiled. So spoiled, that we booked another cruise for the next year, 7-day.

When we got back, I knew that I had been to heaven. I didn't even KNOW how I could explain this to my friends and family. All I knew was...I had to share the magic.

disney-dvd.png

When the opportunity came to share, I freely gave up my BFF's name and address... :rolleyes1

Vickie sort of took my color, so I'll go with another favorite. Just happens to be one of our old high school colors.:goodvibes

Yes, my dear sweet BFF mailed me the Disney Planning DVD. I remember getting the thing in the mail. Before this though, she forgot to mention that after that first trip, they also spent some time in their time share in Virginia. We were living in DC at the time, so my DS (Jacob) and I drove down to meet them. The DH had to work.:sad2: She couldn't stop talking about Disney, the parks and the cruise. Showed me all the pins they had purchased, etcs. It really peaked my interest.

Years went by though and I couldn't ever see us affording a trip. In 2003 we moved from DC, to my hometown of San Angelo, TX. Never thought the military would have us living there. A couple of more years go by and in 2005 we learned DH was going to Iraq for a year, leaving in 2006. In February, 2006, we were trying to get his daughter's mother allow her to come see us. She didn't want her to fly. All these years and Kara hadn't been to our house since she was 3. She was 15 at this point. My DMIL was planning on coming to spend a week when DH would have a break from training. This week happened to be July 4th week. We were hoping the mother would allow Kara to fly with her. Then she came up with the excuse that Kara has a lot of family coming in that hadn't seen her since she was little. Hmmm, let's see, her Dad is going to a war zone. I was ticked. Trying to think of ways around this when . How about a trip to Walt Disney World! It would be hard to deny a child that, no matter how old they were. A little history here, when the custody agreement was drawn up, the only thing Kara's mother made sure was in the agreement was that she would get to take Kara to WDW before us? I think that was another reason we hadn't done it before. But Kara had been to WDW, so that was now a go.

Hmmm, how do we get around the flying. My DMIL decided it would be cheaper to drive. So the plan took shape, as I thought, Kara's Mom could not deny a trip to WDW, couldn't argue about the travel since they would be driving, so the trip was booked.

I hadn't heard of the Dis at this point, but I am a planner, so I researched the WDW website. Jonas loved the look of POR, southern boy that he is, DMIL agreed with the resort, so I went to the base travel agency and had them book our trip. Boy was I in shock when I heard the price. Two rooms, 6 night, 7 days, 7 day tickets for 6.:scared1:

DBIL was also going, but he would be flying down a day later then the rest of us due to work. Luckily I did find the Dis and learned that I needed to make our ADR's right way, we had signed up for the DP. DMIL kept saying she didn't care where we ate, DBIL is a vegetarian, so I was really concerned about him. I kept emailing menus, etc. and always got responses, of sounds nice or doesn't really matter.

The day came to leave and all went well. DMIL and Kara actually arrived before we did. The resort was just gorgeous, as we learned since we made a wrong turn and walked a lot more than we needed to. We arrived in time for our first ADR, SciFi. Had a nice meal. DBIL made it in the next day without a hitch.

On the next to last day, my DH made the following statement "I wouldn't mind coming for 10 days so we can enjoy the resort more.":cheer2: That got me all excited, we were coming back, not sure when, but we would be back.

Here's some pics from our trip:

Sci-Fi

Our first visit to MK

This was within the first 10 minutes of our very first park on the way to Sci-Fi. Even getting poured on, we couldn't help but smile.

Me and DMIL

Yup, it was during that time.

Jacob even got to drive the boat.

And of course, the heat got to everyone.

Notice how I am taking a pic, while everyone but my son is on the train. I stopped to take Jacob's picture, not realizing everyone else decided not to tour that area and go back on the train. They all nicely waved as they left Jacob and I behind. I love my family.;)

It really was a great time, saw all the shows (La Nouba, Wishes, LMA,Fantasmic, Illuminations), rode most of the rides (except IASW, the DMIL wouldn't ride it). Ate some great food...Sci-Fi, Wolfgang Puck, the old Italian place in the WS, Crystal Palace and 50's Primetime. We went to DisneyQuest, both water parks, even hit them both on the same day, followed up with another park. Stayed at MK to 3am.

You notice no photopass pics. I was all excited about using the photopass photographers for group shots, but I didn't realize you had to approach them. I'm use to Six Flags, and other parks where they basically attack you and hold you prisoner until you smile for the camera. So I kept expecting Disney's photographers to approach and they never did. I kept thinking "Are we not photoworthy?":confused3 Of course I've since learned, you go to them.

Our last day, we got on the Magic Express, leaving Kara, DMIL, and DBIL behind to drive home. We were all crying. I kept thinking "People are going to think we are crying because we are leaving WDW." But, this was to be the last time Jonas' family saw him before he left for Iraq.

Once we got home, our rearends found the couch, we went to bed, and the next day we found the couch and didn't get off of it until time to go to bed again.:rotfl2: But we really had the time of our lives.:goodvibes

awww...I didn't know I got your color!! :guilty: I've done blue for so long, I thought I'd try something else.

I did remember how we went to that timeshare -- wasn't it during Thanksgiving? I just don't remember what I said about Disney. I guess I didn't talk the cruise up enough, because you guys have STILL not gone on a cruise!! If we had been stationed in Florida, CRUISE-MECCA, there's no telling how many we'd have been on by now!

I remember your telling me about your DH saying he wouldn't mind coming back for that long -- I was slightly envious. :)

And how crazy is that about provision in the custody agreement? I can think of a lot of things my mother might have said to my biological father, but that would not have been one of them.

Okay...we've established our "roots" of our love of WDW...should we go ahead and give synopsis' of our subsequent trips up to our current status? Or, forgo that and get to the meat of this trip? :confused3

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! I am loving the memories you have!!! So cool how you met! My conversion happened later in life as well....:thumbsup2

Vickie, not sure where to proceed from here. I was just following your lead.;)

Hmmm, do we do more backstory, start planning, or are we even going with a plan or just winging it????

But just thought I would throw this in...here's what Jacob and I did last night

Does he look 61 years old?!?!

Reader's Digest Condensed Version of my life, re: park experiences & best friend! ;) It's so weird how most of our lives we didn't even think about going to WDW, and I really don't ever think about going to DisneyLand.

Thanks!!! Can't believe I didn't go until I was 35!!!

Ho! Rick looks good, but he should cut his hair. Someone should tell him it's not the 80's anymore...!

I think maybe we start on the back-story, then planning part. :yay:
