Can someone walk me through exactly what would happen if I got covid in the U.S.?

If I test positive for covid from the test I’ll take two days before my departure back to Canada from L.A., what would be the actual steps to get back?

As of Jan 15, it shows that you can’t board a flight to Canada until 10 days (will no longer be 14) after getting a positive test. Would I quarantine at my hotel (assuming they have availability for those days) and rebook my WestJet flight for 10 days after my positive result? Does the lab inform anyone of my positive result? Would I need another test less than 72 hours before my rebooked flight back to Canada that’s negative?

I’m just trying to see what the actual practicality is like getting back to Canada if I got covid while on my trip. Thanks in advance!

You could drive home and face a $5,000 fine. Not sure though if anyone has actually been fined and I'm not sure what you could be fined for. You do not need another test as you will probably test positive for 6 months.

The lab would not inform anyone of your positive result. You would just find somewhere to stay. Then order food in while you isolate. In the US current guidance is isolate for 5 days.

You would contact your airline and change your flight and fly back on the 11th day after your positive test or later. No other test needed.

Note this could literally change at any time.
