Hi everyone. My father served in the Navy during the Korean War many years ago, and I called Disney to see what our options were as far as the military discount goes. They were helpful but I'm still a little confused so I hope fellow military family can help me.

My father has his military ID# it's a 7 digit (xxx-xx-xx) number. It's on a very old (but laminated) ID card, but I'm not sure that's what we would need. It says identification on it and my dad said that in the case of a POW situation, they were told to just hand over the card and not speak. He also has his discharge papers. When on the phone with Disney, they told me something about using the ID card THEY would need for shopping at the base, but he hasn't been in contact with the base in years. They also said the discharge papers and military ID# wouldn't help so I'm not sure what to do.

I'm just hoping someone knows what the next step would be. If this isn't the right ID card he would need, is there some place he can call and present this card or his ID#, discharge papers, etc and get the right card so that we can use the discount? Thanks so much!

To simplify, to qualify for the military discount your father would need to be active duty, retired or 100% disabled. If he is not one of these, he's not eligable.
If he's a veteran he is eligable to stay at SOG in September and January. His ID card is probably his old one from active duty days that he never turned back in after seperation.
As far as I know all current military IDs, whether retired or active, all have some sort of expiration date that needs to be renewed.
The easiest thing to do would be to ask your dad. He knows if he's disabled or retired.
I hope this helps.

He would need to go to his local base (closest) and get a current ID card. My dad has been retired since the '80s but he and my mom keep their IDs current and we almost always get a military discount when we go to wdw. He would also have to travel with you FYI or at least be with you to activate the tickets.

The base ITT office is the best resource for availability of the offer. Disney is offering the discount to the local base ticket offices, but they don't handle the ticket promotion and will back off being able to stipulate who can use it.

As said above, he would need to get a new ID card. From there, I would go to the ticket office on base and have them answer your questions. They can even book your Disney hotel if you need -- that way you can guarantee you are eligible and won't hit any roadblocks later on.

Hope it all works out for you! :)

Previous posters are correct. If your father did not retire from his service he is considered a veteran and could only stay at the Shades of Green during the months of September and January. Go to the shades of green org web page more details. If he is qualified as disabled or retired then I believe tickets and accomodations can be booked through Shades of Green.

He should have a copy of his DD-214 around. Or that may be something he can have checked at his local military installation. Good Luck.

I'm sorry but being discharged from or serving in the military does not qualify you for the ticket discounts. Your dad would have to be retired from the military, meaning he served 20 years of service (or more) and receives a monthly income still from the military. My husband served 10 years in the Navy (including war time service), but did not complete the 20 yrs qualifying him for retirement benefits (no income or health insurance; your i.d. card would be current because you present it for your health insurance). He has an old expired i.d., but it does not qualify for the Disney discounts. But as previous posters said, we can stay at Shades those two months a year.

I hope this clears things up a bit for you. The benefits are not for veterans (served less than 20 yrs. in military); only active duty or retired military personnel with i.d. (served 20 or more).

As far as I know all current military IDs, whether retired or active, all have some sort of expiration date that needs to be renewed.

Retired IDs don't expire until the holder does.

That is only after you turn 65 then it doesn't expire if you get tri-care for life. Dependent ID's of retired do expire and have to be renewed.

Don't confuse the medical entitlement expiration on the back with the ID card expiration on the front.
