Can someone please explain curling (the sport) to me?

I saw Curling on the Olympics but I don't quite "get" it.

What is the object of the game?

How do you score?

How many periods are there?

How many are on a team?

I watched it today for the first time, and it looks kind of like shuffleboard on ice. My daughter explained to me that the guys with the broom-type equipment are roughing up the ice to slow down the pot so it does not overshoot the bullseye. That's a very non-complicated to explain it, IMHO.

I enjoyed watching it.

Curling is a mystery of the universe, like why cats always throw up on carpet instead of linoleum. If the answer were revealed, it would signal the end of life as we know it.

Just kidding...no idea, really. I do know the broom thing is to create friction which melts the ice a fraction and allows better sliding. But that exhausts my knowledge of curling.

LOL!!!!!! Two completely different answers about the broom!!!!! I may have dreamed mine - obviously I'm not an expert on curling anything except my eyelashes!!!!

The object of the game is to score more points than your opponent. You score by having your rock(s) closer to the button (middle) of the rings (circles) than the other team. For example if there is one red rock closer to the button than a yellow rock, red would score one. If there are 2 red rocks closer than the yellow rock, red would score 2.

There are 10 ends (periods) in a game and 4 players per team. The lead throws two rocks, the second throws two, the third (mate) throws two and then the skip throws two.

The rock will curl one way or the other depending on which way you turn the rock when you let it go. The sweepers help the rock go further or straighter (sometimes both).

Those are the basics, hope that helps.

I don't know anything about curling but having seen it on t.v., it looks to me like that's what the broom thing is used for. I agree.

The sweeping does melt the ice, wearing off the pebble (the little bumps on the ice).

Watched a little and don't know the rules. Don't understand the yelling going on when the stones are pushed. I think the commentary is good. They mic'd the women's team today and enjoyed the bantor between them (commenting on fans doing the wave etc...). Seems like they're close.

Craziest fans too. People wearing stones on their heads, doing the wave, Aussie cheers. Don't have any courts around here in Ohio, who knows, maybe it will catch on.

Another thing to know is that the ice used in curling isn't like the ice you find in a hockey or skating rink. Curling ice is "pebbled," meaning that the ice has been sprayed with water that freeze creating a bumpy effect, and increasing friction. Toward the end of the match, the pebbles get worn away, so the stones will react differently.

We lived close to the Canadian border and got Canadian tv, so I've been watching curling for about 25 years, and it only really started making sense shortly before it debuted in Nagano.

This website should help http://www.curlingbasics.com

I love curling!

Didn't know what it was before the Olympics started, but now I can't change the channel when its on. It seems to be on very early in the mornings here so I watch it. My whole family has become addicted to it. We still dont know all the rules, but we got the jest of it.

I can't wait to get my curling groupie hat.

Stacerita,
Dd and I are the same way... started watching in Salt Lake and now, I can't turn the channel if it is on...

sorry posted in the wrong place

Curling is Big Time up here where I live.
If you want a movie that not only entertains but actually educates on the sport......I highly suggest you rent "Men With Brooms".

I don't know what it is about curling but when its on I actually have to stop and pause and watch it...its the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen called a sport and I just sit there and laugh watching them do it!

Why do you think it is ridiculous to call it a sport?

I think if you actually tried it and realizes how physically challenging it is, you would change your mind. It is very difficult to throw those rocks and put enough speed and curl on them to place them exactly where you want.
