Can someone help me think through a cancellation/ change?

So, the background:

Room 1
Single person, paid single occupancy rate

Room 2
Handicapped room
Two people, paid double rate

The handicapped cruiser may not be able to go on the trip due to health issues. Obviously we would cancel her out, leaving technically with 1 HA room and 1 standard room.

Can the person left in the HA room just move to the standard room and free up the HA room?
Would there be any additional charges/ refunds for this since the single person paid a healthy premium for the single occupancy?

I appreciate anyone's idea on how this may work. Just trying to make plans, with hopes that I am just panicking!

It really depends on how far out the cruise is. If you are before the PIF date, I would cancel Room 1, do a name change on Room 2 then change Room 2 stateroom number to a non-accessible room.

If you are after the PIF date, then that is an entirely different mess.

And, it depends on whether the lifeboat capacity is full for the single room. If so, you can't add anyone to that room, regardless if there are beds available.

If you can add the (now) single person from room 2 to room 1, you will pay the port taxes and fees applicable to that person.

Right on, Bree. That's good advice (again, it matters if you are past your payment due date, called PIF). Basically you want to cancel one room and put the two non-handicapped people together. Even if you decide this after your PIF date, you still save money by canceling the person who won't go. You'll lose some of your payment depending on when you cancel, but it doesn't make sense of course to just keep both rooms if you only have two people. You might check on the various penalties for cancellation, they tend to differ by when you do it and how long your cruise is.

But basically it will be easy to do, just a simple phone call to Disney, tell them what's up, and they will fix it. In the best world you'll end up with two people in a standard room paying the standard fare. Working away from that, you might stay in the HA room, and you might have some cancellation penalties if you do it too late. But you have lots of options, all of them really good...since you end up going on a Disney cruise!

Thanks for the replies. I really hate to have a HA room that we have no need for is really the issue. Our cruise is January 29th, so we are very close to sail date, as of today the category we have (4E) still has plenty of availability. If they would allow us to move the remaining parties to one room that would be for the best, so I will reach out to DU tomorrow and see what comes.

Can you find someone else to go instead?

At this late date you of course would be PIF plus have completed online check-in, right? On occasion DCL has been known to mail out cruise docs this far ahead, or at any rate have probably printed them for mailing. It will take a boatload of pixie dust to rearrange things now if it is even possible, unless all parties involved have "cancel for any reason" trip insurance. Good luck to you though.
