Can older kids/young teens eat off the kids menu?

Can older kids/teens currently eat off the kids menus, at restaurants in the parks and Downtown Disney? My kdis are 12 and 13, and are fairly picky eaters - they are more likely to eat things like macaroni and cheese and grilled cheese from the kids menus. Thanks!

Most places it will be fine but keep in mind the kids portions at many Disney restaurants are very small. I have started buying adult meals for my 7 year old because the kid meals aren’t big enough. Some places like Blue Bayou and maybe a few others might provide a double portion for double the price. I have also purchased two kids meals at once for my growing boy at Lamplight. 😆

Great question! My daughter is a picky eater, too, so I buy kid meals at quick service restaurants. We haven't tried at sit-down locations, but I've heard from others that most places will allow it. We'll be ordering off the kid menu at Cafe Orleans and Wine Country Trattoria this trip.

I often order kid meals for myself, but usually not at sit-down restaurants like BB or Carthay, so I'm not sure about that. At those places I generally share a meal, and usually pay a little extra for "share" rather than "split." That means they charge a fee but divide the meal in the kitchen and each party gets his/her own sides. There's no fee to split but you have to do it yourself and you don't get the extra sides. Anyway, I've never had an issue at the order-at-the-window restaurants. Sit down, I don't know because I've never tried.

My son is 12, and I've ordered off the kid menu for him on our last trip at both quick service and table service. It is true that some kids menu options are pretty small (example the hamburger at rose tavern was slider sized, but the amount of fries it came with was comparable to what I got, so that was strange).

The only time you cannot do this is at buffet/all you can eat, he was charged full adult price (ex. storyteller cafe breakfast).

Is it possible some CM or restaurant will be picky and not allow you to do that? I suppose, but I have not encountered.

Was at Lamplight and they would not allow my daughter to order off the kids menu (she was 14 and looked to be maybe 12 or so). There was nothing else she would eat. They offered to give it to her if we paid an adult price meal price (I asked if it would then be an adult portion and she said the portion would be the kids portion). We declined and the rest of us ate and we got her a corn dog afterwards. They also sat us at a horrible bar type outdoor table in the sun (and it was in the summer 85 degrees out). Horrible experience, haven't been back to Lamplight after that. I am sure others had better times there, but none of my kids want to return there after all that.

ETA: We asked to be moved, and even though it was early in the day, and 90% of the tables were empty (in the shade) they refused to move us.

Sorry you had that experience, it would be hard to go back after that.

At Lamplight Lounge when I was there two weeks ago (as I mentioned above), we didn't have that problem, however that's probably because we ordered and shared 1 order of Lobster Nachos. As soon as I mentioned lobster nachos, that was it, he didn't want to talk about anything else, so I shared it with him.

We did like it, but I didn't get to "test" them on the kids menu.

The only negative I had was that the waitress kind of disappeared about 3/4 of the way through our time there, and another waiter had to give us our bill.

I went at night and they originally seated us right in front of those fires and it was sweltering. We were starting to sweat so we asked to be moved. Even though there was plenty of other seating we had to go back to the front and wait while they consulted with the manager and about 10 minutes later they moved us to an area away from the fire overlooking the water. It was a good result, but a lot of time wasted for a simple solution.

That is ridiculous. I might have declined to eat there at that point honestly. My mother was allowed to order off the kids menu at Lamplight. She is older and has a small appetite. This was pre-Covid though. 🤷‍♀️

Lamplight offered my big teens food off the kids menu when we only ordered them donuts one time. They had already eaten so we declined, but they did offer. They are both like 5'7" and were 17 and 15 at the time.

My kids are picky too, and have never been told no at any of the Downtown Disney restaurants when ordering off the kids menu. We don't eat at a lot of Disney owned TS restaurants at DLR.

I do remember one time we weren't allowed to order off the kids menu, it was during the Fantasmic dinner at River Belle Terrace. My son was 12 and wanted the kids mac n cheese but they would only let him order off the adult menu. Then my daughter wanted what I didn't realize was the adult dessert (chocolate dragon) and had to have pudding. The dragon looked so fancy, she was upset she couldn't get one. I ended up trading with her. Later the CM offered her one, but after we'd sorted it out ourselves. It was kind of understandable during an event, but I still thought they could have been a little more relaxed about it, especially for the cost. We had already paid and wouldn't have expected to pay less for the kid food. We just wanted them to have a dinner they could eat. That whole meal was pretty bad, come to think of it. Great view of Fantasmic, though! It was worth it just for that.

Once at Cafe Orleans, the hostess would not let us have a kids menu for our son. She said it was reserved for children 9 and under. He's a picky eater and doesn't eat much. So, we asked the waitress and she said absolutely. I understand they want to make sure they are making money, but it's not the staff's job to ensure that my 10+ year old is eating what Disney considers "adult" food. I don't care if they do want to charge me an adult price; he just wants the darn chicken tenders!

I found the kid portions at a lot of the restaurants to be REALLY small. They weren't enough food for my then 8 year old. I think they were toddler sized portions, NOT elementary school sized even.
Yes! At Blue Bayou my son was so hungry still after. I wish I would have thought to order him two meals. I did that the next time at Lamplight. Here are the Lamplight kids brunch burger and the Lamplight kids French toast. He ate both (he is 7).

That’s not how they are supposed to handle situations like this. They are supposed to let you offer off the kids menu and then double both the price and the portion size. I’ve only once been told my daughter (12 at the time) “can’t” order off the kid’s menu at the kids prices and that was at LL, as well. The waiter was very apologetic and said something about them “cracking down” on letting older people order off the menu, but that she could order off the kids menu and they would double the price and double the portion. We were fine with that, and we’ve never had that happen again. My daughter is almost 15 and she was allowed to order off the kids menu at LL a few weeks ago.

If the restaurant isn't adequately staffed (as it seems like has been an issue lately with LL) it's likely you couldn't be moved because there wasn't staffing for the other area.

We love LL, but know that at least since reopening after Covid they have had a lot of staffing issues, so we are extra patient with them.

I found some other kids meal photos for size reference. Apparently I take a lot of photos of food. 😆

Blue Bayou and Carnation Cafe (yes, my kid chose two carbs for his sides 😆).
