You must present either a valid passport or a certified copy of your birth certificate and adults must present a photo ID. Expired passports are no longer acceptable.

INCORRECT! Valid passports are prefered. You have until January 2007 and then you must have a valid passport for everyone.
We just sailed last week on an invalid passport. It is totally exceptable as long as you have other forms of ID such as a drivers license.
You will be asked to fill out an additional form at the check in terminal as well.
Or, you can use the original birth certificate with the raised seal and photo id.
An expired Passport is like anything other legal document that has expired, pretty much worthless.
While Passports aren't required, yet, they have always been the best form of proof of citizenship.
All U.S. and Canadian citizens must travel with proof of citizenship, which is a valid passport, original, state-certified birth certificate and picture identification, or a certified naturalization certificate with a picture identification. Acceptable forms of picture identification are state or provincial driver's license, or federal, state, province or local government photo I.D. card. Guests age 17 and under who are U.S. or Canadian citizens are only required to have proof of citizenship, excluding picture identification. These guidelines are based on U.S. government regulations which are subject to change at any time. It is the Guest's responsibility to check with their Travel Agent, government agencies, embassies or consulates prior to their vacation to ensure that they have proper documentation. Any Guest traveling without proper documentation will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of cruise fare will be issued.
The OP was asking if they can use an expired passport.
The answer is "yes" up until the end of this year.
In this instance the expired passport is not worthless. It still verifies you as an American citizen.
Of course the preference is a valid passport or BC w/ a drivers. lic.
Disney does have it in print that you need a valid passport because you WILL in a few months. And, they cruise to areas that you NEED a passport.
You do not need a valid passport for the Caribbean at this time.
I'm just giving the OP the facts as requested.
Also, since passports are now required by the end of the year, there has been an increase of applications and it's been taking 6 - 8 weeks to process the applications. (unless you pay extra to have them expedited)
Keep that in mind when going for a renewal too.
