I have a 5yr old in a wheelchair and we are not staying on-site thisyear due to a very expensive walker we had to purchase. I want to know if I can still go and visit the resort just to take her to the petting zoo? We keep planning on this but always seem to run out of time.

Yes anyone can go to Fort Wilderness. Just use the Disney transportation (they neve check to see if you are a resort guest). We also go to see the horse barns --- Disney has Percheron and we raise Percherons. Then we have lunch there.

Absolutely you can. The petting zoo is located just outside of Pioneer Hall in Fort Wilderness. The easiest way for a wheelchair guest would be to drive to the Fort Wilderness day parking lot. From there you can catch an internal handicapped accessible bus. Tell the driver where you're going and he/she will take care of you.

There is another way to get there - by boat from the MK. I have heard that it is not very convenient for wheelchairs due to the boat and dock not aligning very well when the Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon water levels are down. But I don't have any first hand information on this, only what I read from other people posting.

Watch out for the goats. We went to the petting zoo at FW many years ago when my DD was only about 5 (she's 16 now). The goatsreally liked the tires of her wheelchair and followed her all around. It was quite funny, but she was a little freaked out by it and was not happy that we were laughing about it.
Also, we wished that we had something to wipe her wheelchair down with after that. It picked up a lot of "animal gook" from driving around the petting zoo area. That meant some of the animal gook also got on her hands when she drove the wheelchair. We had a couple of wipes, but would have prepared with more if we had thought of it.
