Can I sell my contract in my own or do I have to go through a reseller?

We are thinking of selling because our daughters are both college age and our twin boys are now involved in travel baseball at the HS level which now cramps our summer traveling style. It kills me to even post about selling our contract since we have such great memories of our many trips, but it seems that for the mid-term vacation forecast we won't be able to enjoy full use of our points. Do I have to sell through a reseller? Or can I sell privately with those I know may be interested? Thanks!

I believe you can sell on your own but then you have to file the title and change the deed etc. Not worth it to me when I sold my BWV contracts and bought BCV.

On another note - have you considered renting out your points for a few years - you might be able to start taking those vacations again!

You can sell it yourself (but not on this board, so your post will likely be edited).

You will still have to submit the contract to Disney for ROFR and such.

Since ROFR is an issue, there's not much benefit to buying directly from an owner, though.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. We have rented some points in years we know we won't use them all or at all. Don't mean for this to come across as a sales ad, but didn't know if others had a similar scenario with a partial contract and tried to sell. Good to know about the title and deed, etc. I hadn't even thought that far ahead. Lots to consider....

It's easy to sell it yourself for many situations though you might get less than selling through a company. Frequently it's about a break even selling privately rather than paying the 10% through a company. However, it depends on what you have and how much effort you want to put into it. All a broker really does is find a buyer, you can hook up with a closing company yourself or even better, just direct a buyer to one and let them proceed with the details. Many buyers have a preference anyway. I'd sell it privately if you have something small, unique, high demand or already have a buyer such as family/friends, otherwise I wouldn't fool with it. Remember it only retains the qualified status if you gift it, even if you sell to a family member, it becomes unqualified. It'd also be illegal to say it's for free if it isn't. Most companies do non exclusive contracts so you could proceed down both sides of the street if you wanted. Just remember to check with and handle appropriately where it's listed if you do end up selling it yourself.

I'd suggest you consider just renting it for a few years if you're unsure and have a 3-5 yr window to navigate, only you know the variables here well enough to judge.

We are in a similar boat (travelling baseball) and have decided to use David's to rent rather than selling right now - I figure its a sunk cost and capital I don't need to free up - and there is a good possibility my parents can use the points for a few weeks in the Winter to escape Minnesota.

I agree with Dean and Crisi, I would also consider renting your points. From my experience once my "kids" turn 25 Disney came back in favor (at least 2 out of three did). Also once Grandkids come into the picture Disney becomes new again.
PS You have the DVC membership already, if you sell and may not have the extra money to buy in the future. After college costs, weddings, elderly parents, grandkids, pets you may never be able to buy in the future. Just a thought!

I just had my contract listed with a broker AND listed privately...I received 0 offers from the broker (and I used the most well-known one) and it only took 20 days to find a buyer myself. I created a relationship with one of the best title companies in Orlando and it was a piece of cake. They handle ROFR and EVERYTHING else. And my buyer paid all closing costs. I was able to list it for less privately since I didn't have to pay the 10% commission...so my buyer saved and so did I - it was a win-win. The only thing I had to do was create the contract (which I actually just copied, pasted, and pieced together off another resale I just purchased haha).
If you want to sell, do it now! If you figure out in 10 years you want to start traveling again to Disney, just buy another contract then (or rent points). You figure with 2042 approaching DVC contract prices are only going to go down. You could sell now, invest that money, and in 10 years purchase DVC with the interest you made

I sold my 270 Disney's Boardwalk Villas Resort contract myself. It was easy. I did use a closing agent to record the deed and hold the escrow money for me.

Our 'kids' (32,30,26) like Disney but it's not 'special' for them - for US it's the best/most relaxing vacation.

We enjoy a non-WDW vacation annually and the side benefit is that it always convinces us WDW is for US. While nothing is absolute (and who wants it to be ), WDW is clean, maintained, CS oriented, and easy. We no longer do 'commando', we have no urge to climb into the FP+ mania - anymore than we did the old FP system. We're on vacation and fast doesn't = vacation. So we'll continue to go 2 or 3 times a year because WDW vacation: drive to airport park, stress free enjoyment until 7 days later when we return to drive the car home. No fighting the traffic, no wondering where to get the car, park the car, where did we park the car, should we be driving the car ... a week of moseying around, hop in a line here and there, stopping for libation with a bit of food, enjoying fireworks and shows and nice bed/room with plenty of towels.

We have 3 in HS, including twin girls who play travel softball...they are freshman so we have 3 more years of this. They are doing HS ball now and will begin travel ball Memorial Day weekend. They Did winter workouts with both teams and they play in showcase tourneys every weekend from Mem Day through 1st week in Aug...then they start back up for fall tourneys so we get a couple weeks in Aug as downtime and Thanksgiving and Xmas week. So we have used our points for Xmas week a couple times and we do Aug trips. Dh and I did F&W last year without the kids and we want to start doing that every year...just can't do it this year. Maybe consider keeping your points and working around the schedule. This Aug I am taking my DDs to WDW...just us gals for 5 nights and then we are driving up to HH to meet the guys for 5 nights there. We did VB for 4 nights and drove over to US Hard Rock for 2 nights there to see HP stuff...did that in Aug 2012. We are going to start saving some points for Aulani...hopefully. Just some vacation ideas to think about.

If you do decide to sell, yes you can sell it on your own but be careful and research. Someone posted recently about a reservation that got canceled because the contract closed early...that was a FSBO and the folks didn't know the resie was canceled until they had arrived in FL and their family was due to fly in the next day. Was a crazy mess that took a lot of sweat and tears to get fixed...but wouldn't have happened if they used a broker.

Edit to add that we considered selling, after a horrible trip this past Xmas where we realized our DS-17 is just not into Disney anymore. We even listed our 200 OKW points to sell but luckily no bites after a month. We took it off the market and just added 55 BWV points for those F&W trips. We just won't take DS to WDW again...until, like a PP mentioned, he's like 25 and wanting to come back to the mouse. Meanwhile, DH and I can do adult only trips and might bring friends and, at some point, we hope to winter at WDW. ..at least 4 to 6 weeks there.
