Hi All,

My wife has been perusing these boards recently and came across some posts about "Ice Wine". Her parents are the "difficult" type to buy presents for as they just buy what they want when they want it...how frustrating. She thought that a bottle of Ice Wine would be unique and not something that they would get on their own.

Here's the problem...where do we get some?? Is it available at Epcot outside of the Food & Wine Festival? Is it available anywhere?? As you can tell I'm not a "wine person", more like a "beer in a can" person, but that's another topic.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Canada in Epcot.

I have heard they sell it in Canada at LeCellier (by the ounce), I am also hoping that they sell by the bottle.

Realize that it is actually sold by the 1/2 bottle and can cost $40 - $60/bottle.

There is also a store called "World Market" that someone said carried Ice Wine at a much cheaper price. We have some in St. Louis, so check anywho.com and see if there is one near you.

I just checked online and World Market carries it under "New Arrivals" but there is no price.

If you find it on-property, the price may lead you to believe you're buying the whole vineyard and not just a bottle of grape juice.

I'd check the local Publix or Goodings.

I've also seen several vineyards' Ice Wine at my local Discount Liquor Store (God I love that store! LOL)

There are several types of Canadian Ice Wine sold in Massachusetts (a quick hop north of you). The Inniskillen Vidal Ice Wine I know is available, plus you can find Château des Charmes, another very good Ontario producer (my fav') here in Mass.

I know in the Germany pavillion at EPCOT you can both taste and buy full (or rather half) bottles of Eiswein (simply German for Ice Wine, and the original product the Canadian vintners are reproducing). You can also try the Beerenauslese (literally select berry late harvest) which can be as intense as Ice Wine/Eiswein.

The deal with Ice Wine/Eiswein, and the reason it is so expensive, is that the grapes are left to shrivel on the vine (thus concentrating the sweetness) until they freeze there, then they are picked and crushed, with only the tiniest little bit of concentrated nectar coming from the grapes. Seriously, it takes something like 5 or 6 bushel baskets full of grapes to produce just one of those half bottles (375ml) of Ice Wine/Eiswein, so it's pretty expensive stuff to produce. But boy is it worth it!

The other German sweet wines have other degrees of sweetness, starting with the very sweet and elegant Auslese (literally late harvest) which is harvested late so the grapes can concentrate their sweetness, Beerenauslese in which only the sweetest individual grapes are chosen from the late harvest grapes for an even more concentrated wine, and most expensive (even more than Eiswein) Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA), in which the grapes are allowed to be attacked by a fungus, known as "noble rot" so that they shrivel up (trocken means dry, so the individual grapes are almost completely dried up) to the most concentrated sweetness imaginable

Again, for easy access, go to the Canada or Germany pavillion at Epcot to get something special like this (not sure about Canada, but I know you can buy the bottles at Germany). You could go to one of the better liquor stores in your area, or just over the border in Mass, but it might be more special if you taste it there in WDW and bring back a bottle of something your really enjoyed.

Good luck.

I was at a local wine specialty shop in Hingham, MA recently and they sold ice wine. It was around $40 a bottle. When we were at the F&W Festival, they had booths which were selling all of the wine products. DH is not a wine lover due to the bitter after-taste but really liked ice wine.

I'd suggest calling wine stores in your local area. You may find one that sells it. Good luck. Annmarie

There's an ABC store in the shopping plaza at Westwood Blvd and I-Drive ( the northern intersection) which has a very large wine selection at very reasonable prices.
