Can I purchase AP ahead of time to book room for discount?

We took a year off of our AP's so we could see DL for a year. Now we are wanting to go back to WDW and we do have DVC but I frequently will add a night or two to the front of our stay at a different resort with the AP discount. Usually we already have our AP's in hand. This time I will need to purchase them before our trip. Can I purchase the AP's now and then use them to get the room discount? If so, can I do that online or will I have to work with a CM?

You don't need to actually have the AP in hand to book a room with the AP discount. You can call & check AP rates & book on the phone without one. The CM may ask to see it when you check in. If you haven't activated it by then, you have 24 hours to activate it & then show it at the desk to keep your discount.

Okay. I plan on purchasing soon. I just couldn't remember if would let me access the online availability and discounts before it is activated. Ty!

Yes, once you have purchased your AP and have it linked in MDE you can see availability and book the AP room discounts online. I just recently did it and we will not be activating our AP's until our trip at the end of May.

I had a discount booked under the Florida Resident discount, but after seeing that the AP discount was better, I was able to do a "change" and get the better rate. I hate to have to call to make or change bookings.

I literally just did this yesterday. We have an un-activated AP that we plan on activating on a trip in May. We called to book the AP discount for a trip in June since we found out it would be cheaper for us to stay on-site than off-site based on where we were staying. We didn't have any problems getting the discount.
