Can I Pick and Choose which UY points to use?

I currently have banked points, and soon will have 2011 UY points and 2012 UY points that can be barrowed. I would like to plan a WDW holiday vacation that will result in booking multiple rooms resulting in the use of a large part of those points. Because of the time of year, I intend on making them at the eleven month window. My question would be, can I pick and choose what UY points can be used to book each room? To give an example, can I use banked points and barrowed points for rooms for those who are “sure” of going and the current UY points for rooms for those questionable quest? As you can see, I am looking for a way to best secure the points involved in reservations that have the possibility of being cancelled.

DVC always makes sure to use the points that will expire first, which in your case would be your banked points.. you only have those for so long (technically). And then I think they would use the UY points in order. You will use 2011 UY points and then if needed borrow from 2012.. I don't think you can technically pick and choose. Just make sure if you need to cancel you leave enough time so you get all of your points back.

Hope this helps!

DVC won't borrow points until you need them. Therefore, if you want to make sure that those rooms that you know for sure use "borrowed" points, book those last.

Same with banked points. Book the rooms with the banked points that are definite and then book the rooms that may be cancelled using the current UY points.

What DVC will not do is take banked points and borrowed points for one reservation when you have current UY points available for booking in the same contract.

If you have different memberships (ie: different UY's), then you can borrow from one while you have current UY points in the other as they are seen as two separate memberships.

But, other than that, borrowing only happens when they are needed to complete a reservation. As long as you still have current UY points available, they will not allow you to borrow.

The good thing is that if you did have someone cancel a reservation with the borrowed points, you can ask MS to reallocate the points you are using for your trip. They can then swap out the borrowed for the current UY points, as long as everything happens at least 31 days in advance (to avoid holding) and you are still in your banking window so you can benefit.

I've asked for the banked or borrowed points to be used for our room.

As I recently found out, this can be tricky. The computer is just not set up to use current use year points for the questionable reservations first -- you need to use banked and borrowed. At the same time, you cannot borrow until you use current (although there are some reports of being alowed to do so.) But one thing you can do is make dummy reservations to "occupy" your points and allow use of the points you want. Then you can go back and cancel the dummy reservation to open back up the points you want.

Here's an example: You have 150 points per year. You want to make 5 reservations of 80 points each, two of which are questionable and three of which are for sure. All reservations will be in the 2011 use year, which currently has its 150 regular points and 150 points you banked from this year. Here's one way to do it if you wanted to do it all in advance, without cancelling and reapportioning later:

1) Book for sure number 1, using 80 banked points. This leaves you with 70 banked and 150 regular.

2) Find a reservation that uses exactly 220 points. Book it. This is dummy number 1. Now, you have no points left in 2011. Find a reservation that requires exactly 90 points. Book it, by borrowing 90 points from the 2012 UY. This is dummy reservation number 2.

3) Cancel dummy 1 and dummy 2. Now, you have the following in 2011 UY: 70 banked, 150 regular, 90 borrowed. Book for sure numbers 2 and 3, using the 70 banked and 90 borrowed points.

4) Book questionable number 1 and 2, using your 150 regular points, plus you'll still need to borrow 10 more from 2012.

End result: 3 reservations using banked and borrowed, 2 using mostly curent use year points and 10 borrowed. If you end up canceling the questionable reservations, you'll be left with 150 regular points in 2011, 10 borrowed points in 2011, and 50 regular in 2012.

There are easier ways to do it, but I think this is the most efficient and leaves you with the minimum possible banked or borrowed points (10) on your 2 questionable reservations.

YMMV, but something similar (though less complicated) worked for me recently.
