Can I improve my chances of getting a long weekend reservation?

As someone that is still new to DVC, I’m hoping that someone can give me some advice on getting the best chance at getting my dates for a long weekend reservation at the 7 month mark. Please let me know if this is breaking the rules and if I’d run into issues with doing this.

If I’m trying to get 4 nights, say for *** 5th, 6th, 7th 2012, and I’m trying to get a difficult reservation such as *** at the 7 month mark, I’m allowed to make this reservation at 9:00 am (7 momths out). Now if I have enough points available to reserve 7 days, I could call (7 months out) and reserve *** 1st through 7th. I’m thinking that about a week later, I call back and drop *** 1st thru *** 4th. The additional points should just go back to my normal use year without penalty. Is this correct? There are less odds that all 7 days are going to be available, but if they are, then I’ve reserved my room 4 days earlier.

Of course, if *** 1st through 7th wasn’t available, I could call back on *** 2nd to try and reserve *** 2nd thru Dec 7th, and continue doing this each day until I get *** 5th-7th included in the reservation. Regardless, I’d end up dropping any days on the front end shortly after making the reservation. My thinking is that I can get 5 opportunities to get my reservation rather than just wait until the actual date that I need.

Is there a penalty for doing this that I’m not seeing? Is this not buying me a better chance? Has anyone done this already, and did you have any problems? Is this considered “Walking” a reservation if I’m not adding additional days on the other end?

I’m interested in other people’s opinion on this tactic. If you think that this is a horrible thing, even though it “meets the rules”, I’d like to know. I don’t want to break the rules or do anything under-handed, but this seems to be a good way to improve my chances. What am I missing?

That is "walking a reservation". It is within the rules.

True, this is within the rules, but the effectiveness of walking a reservation at 7 months is not as effective as at the 11 month window, as you will have all resort owners with an opportunity to book ahead of you.

99% of my DVC stays are "long weekends" either Thurs-Monday or Friday-Tuesday. Never have walked a reservation or under the old system called day by day.

I've booked 2brs at BCV/BWV(BW view) and BLT(MK view) at 7 months. Best advice is to be on the phone right at the 7 month mark.

I didn't even walk my week in a Beach Cottage at VB. Just was on the phone at the 11 month mark.

Thanks for the feedback! :thanks:

These forums are great. You couldn't get these kinds of answers from Disney direct.

Success will greatly depend on the time of the year, resort and room category. Some rooms will book up exactly at 11 months....others will not book up at all.

The best chance of success is to book your home resort while you have a booking advantage. If you want to try to walk the reservation later, you could...but honestly I haven't seen much were people "needed" to walk their reservations or being blocked out of their resort. The old day by day booking was getting a bit out of hand and it was said if you didn't do it you would be blocked out for sure, but a lot of that was just talk and most people could have booked chunks in advance (obviously some exceptions existed).

The biggest problem with your plan, is that if you call x number of days in advance and for some reason that first date or any date in that time frame were booked, you will be forced to waitlist the whole time or call back later to try to book. I think it will be a lot of hassle for it, especially if it is a busy time, most likely it would be booked anyway. IMO, book your home resort, try for the new one right at 7 months and waitlist if it isn't available.....you will probably succeed by the time the trip comes around.

Walking a reservation at 7 months is almost always a waste of time, especially if it is for a popular time.

If any of the days along the "walk" are unavailable, then all the calls you made to that point will be for nothing and you start over on the next day.

Seriously, walking only makes sense a t 11 months and it is not necessary even then, except for a very few, specific times and room categories.
