Can I have your opinions, please? SSR extra years vs. BWV proximity

Hi everyone! You have all been so helpful in the past by all of your posts... I've learned so much.

My DH and I are going to be joining DVC within the next few months. We have 2-year-old twins. I am 29 and DH is 32. Here's the question:

Are the extra years on the contract at SSR better, given our age/family situation, or is the proximity to Epcot/MGM better for the remaining 40 or so years of our DVC membership?

We're deciding, obviously, between buying through Disney or a resale. Here's my thinking, please point out any observations you can make with my logic. With SSR, by the time the contract is up, my children will be 52. I'll be 78, DH will be 81 (of course, presuming we are still around.) With Boardwalk, our kids will be 40 and I'll be 66, DH will be 69.

However, I think I would prefer to stay more often at BWV or BCV while the children are under 18, after that, it still would be nice to have the proximity to the parks. DTD is alot of fun, and we do enjoy going there, but we're not into the whole PI scene necessarily.

I know you all always say that you should buy where you want to stay, but I really forsee us wanting to stay at several different places, BCV, BWV, VWL and SSR. Of course we'll make a few 2-day-trips to VB occassionally. We're also going to be pairing a 4-day stay with DVC along with a 3- or 4-day Disney Cruise.

So there's my dilemma. I really like the fact that SSR has the extra years, and, depending on the age that our children have children of their own, they could always use the points as well. The extra years are so enticing, but on the surface, I can't see staying at SSR regularly (as my first choice) for about 14 years (and the kids want to explore DTD and do DisneyQuest on their own, if they're able to earn the trust at that point.)

So there are my thoughts. I know you all will have suggestions as to what to do. I'm just torn! Money really isn't the issue, I mean, if we could save a bit, that would be great, but we're not doing this to count pennies - we're doing it to make wonderful memories for our twins. :earsgirl: :earsboy:

If you'd rather stay somewhere like the Boardwalk, then buy there (if SSR is going to be as big as they say, then you should always be able to book there if you want). 38 years is still a pretty long time and the extra years would be pointless if you're not happy with your home resort. Buying a resale would still make it a good deal per year.

I agree that if Boardwalk is where you want to stay year after year then that is where you should look at buying.

BWV: you want to stay there...you can always buy as SSR resale in a few years...there will be so many of them. Good luck.

I also agree, if you want to be at BCC/BWV buy there. These are both difficult to get into at 7 months and this will not get any easier. I would go resale at BCV or BWV, and save the difference for a rainy day, or more points.

Another vote for BWV or BCV here ...

38 Years is an awfully long time. You are buying this thing for family enjoyment. If you intend to visit the parks regularly on your trips and you like close proximity, then it's tough to beat the location of Boardwalk and Beach Club.

Good luck with your decision.

BW definitely! Think about how long 50 years is. Or 38 years. This is a couple of lifetimes when it comes to what people think they will want to be doing in that time. BW contracts last longer than you have been on earth so far. Though we all love Disney here, in 20 or 30 years we might have had enough. ( unlikely, I know, but still possible ) Go for what you know you want today and tomorrow will take care of itself!

I too really struggled with this decision!! My situation is a little different as I am now 46. However, I agonized over this, thinking that owning at SSR would be wonderful for my children once I am gone. In the end, I ended up buying at BWV. I figure that it is more likely I will be able to get into SSR at the seven month window than vice versa. My husband REALLY wanted the close proximity to the two parks. Someday, I will give SSR a try, but I don't see myself staying there often. Luckily, I was able to snag a 160 point resale with a full year of banked points for $70. (per point) Let us all know what you decide to do!!! Best of luck!!!

Buy where you think you will want to stay the most. If you think you're going to move around, but really love the BW, then buy there and move around. I really think that SSR will be easier to get into, like OKW, at the 7 month window and closer.

Disclaimer: I'm biased - I love the BWV.

I'm 37. My kids are 4 and 5.

In 38 years, I'll be 75. I like to flatter myself that my 76 year old hubby and I will still walk the World, but relistically.....? And we will be happy, if we are so fortunate, to stay at a resort.

My kids will 42 and 43. They may love Disney and my grandkids may love it to, but we didn't buy for imaginary grandkids 30 years from now. Hopefully, my kids, should they want them, will be able to afford their own Disney vacations. But they may not love Disney. The parks may not be the same places 30 years from now.

...And that's why I love these boards.

Thank you so much for the advice. I'm going to contact the Timeshare Store and talk with them about a resale. Since we'll be buying outright with cash, the Disney financing doesn't hold the incentive it might for other people.

Thank you all again... and if there are any other opinions out there (the same or different) I'd welcome those as well!

Sherri :)

I also agree that you should buy where you want to stay most right now. We bought BWV resale a year and a half ago and have not regretted at all. We love the location, the activities, and just feeling like we are in the middle of it all. Plus we also like the use of the two tier point system at BWV and the ability to use the 11 month window to reserve a Boardwalk view. The use of standard points and reserving a Boardwalk view will IMHO become much harder at the 7 month window once SSR is close to sell out.

Good luck with your decision!

Also...

There's a lot of speculation that some time before 2042, DVC/Disney will ofer some sort of "extension" to the original contracts, for a price.

I hadn't heard that anywhere here... wow, what an intriguing possibility. That's something to consider as well.

As for the BWV standard/preferred view, that's a motivating factor in the BWV choice. But now I'm thinking I'm leaning toward BCV, because we're "pool people" and there's still the proximity to the parks and we can always walk to the BW. (I believe!)

Thanks again!

Sherri :)

If you're undecided at all, go with the least expensive -- which would be BWV.
