We own at OKW with a June use year.

We would like to plan a family reunion trip at OKW. We would need a two bedroom for my family, and 3 studios for the others. I am trying to keep the number of points that I need to rent to a minimum by booking 3 studios instead of a grand villa. I do not own enough points to get rooms for everyone. Would I be able to rent points from someone to cover the trip, then reserve multiple rooms with member services?

I know that DVC changed some of the rules about this recently. Thanks for any info!

There are several ways to accomplish your goals.

One is to have the required number of points transferred into your account. That's the least-risky method because you have full control of the points and all of the ressies once the transfer is completed. However -- and this is a significant however -- you will have to find one owner with sufficient points to transfer to fill your needs. There can only be one transfer in or out in a year, so you have to find one source for all those points.

Another way is to make one or more rental arrangements for the needed accommodations yourself -- meaning that you rent the ressies, not the people staying in the rooms. The advantage of doing this is that you oversee the whole process, although obviously the owner you rent from still controls the reservations.

The third way is to refer your guests to the DIS Rent/Trade board and have them rent their own ressies. The upside of that is it takes you completely out of the transactions, and any problems that occur are someone else's problem. The downside is that you are putting newbies in the position of having to go to school on DVC rentals, and they are shouldering the risk.

Despite the downsides, considering all the "my-relatives-canceled-at-the-last-minute" threads we see, I personally would prefer that last option. If I were an owner renting, I'd prefer the first option, because it's a nice, easy, quick deal.

We've done this a couple of times with a 2 BR as a home base and kitchen access then studios for the various family components. The last time was 1999 so we had the added benefit of free passes as well which were the best value for a studio for most groups. One way to stretch points is not to use them for Fri and Sat nights. You could get cash discounts for those nights for many times of the year and link to your current reservation. As noted, renting or getting points transferred in are also viable options.
