Can I change a 2 bedroom lock off to a 1 bed?

I am thinking about booking a 2 bed lock off for early Dec 2016 to bring another family with us (VGF). If they back out, can I drop the studio and keep the 1 bedroom? I don't want to risk losing the 1 bedroom to a wait list if I cancel.

You'd have to get a bit of luck and a CM that might do it for you. They are different booking categories and are technically supposed to be a cancellation and rebooking if you wanted to change from the 2BR lock off to a 1BR. I asked about it once a year or so ago and was told no.

Thanks - that's what I was afraid of! We had such a wonderful stay in a 1 bed at VGF (standard) in September this year! I don't want to risk losing it by canceling!

Historically this has been a cancelation and rebooking but it seems the last couple of years that has not necessarily been he case. I'd call or email DVC about the question and if you get affirmative answer, keep the reference info just in case. Of course booking the 2 BR and 1 BR is the safest if you have the points to do so, the next best is to book them separately and spend the few points extra.

I went ahead and booked a 1 bedroom today for the week after Thanksgiving for next year. Friends are going to stay at POR and seem excited about this.

As others have said, there are certainly no guarantees to be able to go from a 2 bdrm lock off to a 1 bdrm, but I have done it more than once over the 20+ years as a member. And a number of years ago when I worked MS we could definitely perform that function then. I like the idea of emailing MS to ask.
