Can I ask another travel question?

Can you bring tobacco products on a plane? DH has a nasty habit of smoking cigars. Can he take his travel size humidor with cigars inside in his carry on of does it have to go in the checked luggage?

On my recent trip to China, passengers were carrying on huge trash bags full of cartons of cigarettes so I would think a small case of cigars is going to be fine.

There are two considerations: transporting cigars and cigarettes on a plane, and taking them through customs.

There are basically no limits to taking tobacco products onto a plane, whether as checked luggage or in your carry-on. The limits - and they are strict ones - come when and if DH suddenly gets the urge to light up a cigar and puff away. That is an absolute no-no.

As for taking the humidor full of cigars through customs, that should not be a problem. As long as the amount is small and for personal use, it should be within the limits for any country. (For import into the U.S., by the way, the limit is 100 cigars - and non-Cuban cigars, at that. ;) )

Believe me, that's not going to happen. ;) He learned his lesson about smoking many years ago when we went to Disney for the first time. He lit a cigarette on Main Street and was quickly surrounded by CMs telling him to put it out immediately. DH really is a considerate smoker. Even where it is allowed, he will ask anyone around him if it's going to bother him. Our state has been completely smoke free (including casinos, bars, bowling alleys...) for two years now.

The humidor that he's bringing is for travel. I think that it only holds 20 cigars at most. He'll get matches or a lighter when we land. Our trip is from Chicago to Honolulu. I'm stressing enough as it is so thankfully, we don't have to go through customs.:scared1:

Hopefully, this time tomorrow we will be somewhere high over the mid-west!:woohoo:

Hawaii has one of the most restrictive smoking laws. He'll have a hard time finding a place to smoke. Here are the restrictions as posted by the Hawaii Department of Health:

"1) No smoking in enclosed public spaces. Examples include bars, restaurants, clubs, airports, theaters, government facilities, and stadiums. Indoors or outdoors, if the space is at least partially enclosed by walls, smoking is prohibited.
2) No smoking in places of employment. This means any- where someone works, including all offices, and also private homes that double as businesses.
3) No smoking within 20 feet of doorways, windows, and ventilation intakes of the above areas."

Since hotels are places of business, many prohibit smoking on their grounds altogether.

Remember that he can't take his cigar cutter as a carryon. He can check that, though. I don't know what the rule is about cigar punches, but to be safe, I'd check that, too.

He can check matches and a torch lighter. DH learned that the hard way when he had the option of throwing out the torch he bought in Russia when we adopted our kids (sentimental value) or taking it back to our car that was parked at an offsite lot. He took it back to the car since we had time.

My DH takes his travel humidor every time he travels and has never had a hard time with customs or TSA.

I reminded him last night to put that in the bag that will be checked.

Maybe ithat's a good thing .;)

These rules sound very similar to the ones that we have here in IL. I'll have to check what the rules are at the Hyatt.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

I just wish that he never started again. He quit cigarettes about 6 years ago and recently started on this cigar kick. :sad2:

My DH likes to have a cigar every now and then. He has never had a problem with checking them in his humidor.

Has your DH ever been to Cigarfest here in the Lehigh Valley, PA? It's a huge todo with tons of products showcased and given out. DH goes every year with a friend of his and they come home with bags full of give-aways. People come into town from all over the country for the event.

When does that take place? My DH would probably be interested and it would only be a day trip for him since it's only (at most) an hour's drive from here.
