Can DVC overbook?

So I have been stalking the DVC site forever hoping for Sept 9-12. Nothing has been available anywhere, not even one day.

I went on again yesterday and all of a sudden the entire month of September (and Oct and Nov) was open at OKW, AKL Kidani Savannah was open, and preferred SS was open- again almost the entire month. I quickly booked OKW and received my confirmation.

I went back on today to see if anything else was available and everything was gone again. This freaked me out a little. Can DVC be overbooked? Why would something like that happen?

Thanks!

Yup I noticed too. But I was watching all day and the days slowly disappeared. I've seen it happen a lot with poly. I have no explanation but I grabbed the 2 nights and switched to savanna view at kidani yesterday when that happened. I had it waitlisted and it didn't grab it. So I cancelled and re booked. It looked like kidani, OKW, SSR, BRV, POLY from what I saw yesterday. Entire sept-December opened at all of them.

Disney will not overbook. If there was a glitch that caused overbooking, they would notify you and come up with a solution.

Keep in mind that the RAT says there is availability, but it does not tell you whether it is one villa available or a bunch of villas available. In situations like you are describing, it is probably one villa due to one cancellation, and when it is gone, it is gone.

For new resorts like Poly and Copper Creek, sometimes they will release a new chunk of rooms into inventory. These resorts will open up, and it could cause a cascade effect if people had waiting lists there.

It was not one villa opening up due to a cancellation yesterday. When i checked, almost every resort had villas open for our trip the last week of september. I have been checking for weeks, and there have literally been no villas of any size at any WDW resort.

I have been lucky enough to get a Poly studio in the past when they released more villas due to a Disney declaration. This was not that. I have literally never seen so many villas open up one day the whole 11 years I have been a member.

I read on Facebook that it was a Disney IT glitch. Hope not because I also extended our September stay by adding on days at another resort after cancelling part of my BWV reservation.

I saw this yesterday too! Tons of options opened for late November when I have a waitlist at Poly. I decided not to switch to any of them, and my waitlist is still active, but today ALL of those other options are gone. My guess was that they had released some rooms at Poly or CC, and a bunch of waitlists had been fulfilled opening the others, but it was a remarkable change in availability.

This does happen when a room at a resort gets put back into inventory. I've seen it happen often. But yesterday, wow, so many resorts were open. It was a gift for many. It was at Bwv, ssr, akk, okw, poly. I managed to grab a couple of days at Bwv. While I posted it on the disboards, someone actually posted it on Facebook, which really got the rooms flying out. Personally I'm not worried since I've gotten a room like this a few years ago. While it looked like a lot of rooms, it was probably one room at each of those resorts. After I booked my 2 night, they were gone from availability.

I use an app that tells me when availability opens up or gets booked and there were dozens of openings and bookings across almost every resort on Friday and yesterday...I'd never seen that! I think that the waitlists tied to newly declared inventory at CCV is the most logical scenario, though I hope it's not a glitch for everyone's sake.

Legally? NO. EVERY INDIVIDUAL DVC has a certain number of points. The total number of points at each INDIVIDUAL DVC location are owned by DVC members, and WDW.

EACH PARTY may pretty much do with their points, as they choose. WDW chooses to RENT them, or SELL them. So do many private DVC owners. I emphasized INDIVIDUAL, because your HOME Resort contract is your HOME Resort Contract..... Your CONTRACT concerns your HOME RESORT. Everything else is a "maybe". Please, BUY where you want to STAY - and accept that you may very well NOT get into anything else.

The concept of a ceiling on total points is written into the DVC Contract that each of us received when we bought in. Violate the contract? Translation: Court, lawsuit. For either party,

I actually wish AIRLINES had to act in this fashion :).

All I know is that I picked up OKW and then booked flights. So I'm praying for no glitches. All of Disney, not DVC, is packed and sold out that weekend.

After I grabbed what I wanted, and double and triple checked that they were listed on my upcoming vacations....and received an e-mail confirmation....and continued watching throughout the day, and seeing rooms disappearing every few minutes, I started getting the funny feeling. Ended up calling member services.....was reassured by the MS person that all was well. Because I kept saying it seemed too good to be true. She knew all about the sudden availability of rooms, reassured me that I did indeed have the rooms, etc. Then I panicked because when I made the AK midnight magic reservation, it was under my first room and I told her I was worried they would cancel me. Nope, they won't. I think a small number of rooms had been taken out of inventory from these resorts for whatever reasons....remember a few weeks back people were complaining about more work being done on BoardWalk rooms and some people had to be moved? Whatever happened, it was a nice surprise. But same as a PP, as soon as I booked my room, it disappeared off the RAT.

Is that an iphone app? Can you share what it's called? I want it! :)

And we've seen exactly that pattern before with rooms added to inventory. We've also seen situations where a resort will open up because they had planned construction and those rooms freed up when work got done early, which caused the same cascade effect through rooms.

The one time DVC does overbook is when maintenance happens that isn't planned- or is planned badly or goes over schedule - pulling an unexpected block of rooms from inventory. And ONCE since I've owned they pulled a bunch of OKW Villas for the PGA tour, stranding some members - but the cry from membership was so loud that I haven't seen anything like that since then (and that was fifteen years ago or so).

I wonder if a possible contribution to the Sept openings was people not booking the DVC AK after hours party in time before it was booked out, and then reconsidered their plans? I think crisi's idea about adding rooms to inventory is more likely. It was unusual availability, but congrats to those who were able to grab what they wanted. I got lucky a couple of days ago when Nov. 1 opened up for a studio at Boardwalk which is really unusual availability for the F & W festival.

It could be a combination of things that people cancelled reservations because the banking deadline for December UYs is July 31st. Breakage could be a factor that those rooms are available for booking but that can only be done at the 60 day mark.

But I suspect that it is another glitch in the availability system that they were always available but the system didn't show it properly.

Sounds good to me!

Also a possibility given what has been going on with normal resort availability (or lack thereof).

I've been trying to put together a last minute trip for August. I couldn't get all of my days ANYWHERE for my time period, not even SSR. I too had the pleasure of seeing massive availability when I checked Saturday morning. A BWV studio Boardwalk view was available for all of July, August and September. (Except July 1,2,&3) It was pretty much the same availability for a Kidani savanna view. There were other resorts with this kind of availability. I never saw so much "green" for last minute reservations! I would have preferred my home resort of BCV or VGF but they did not open up. So we are trying AKV for the first time and a Boardwalk view for the first time as well. We have enjoyed BWV a few times in the past but never a Boardwalk view. I was positive it was a glitch too and knew that when I got to the end of the reservation process it wouldn't complete. I was pleasantly surprised!!!

I would love to know the name of that app :-)
