I have a document in English with Chinese characters underneath. I need to SAY the text in Mandarin. So I need the Mandarin portion translated into Pinyin so I can sound out the words in Mandarin (not Cantonese.) Or if somebody can read it in Mandarin & be willing to phonetically write out the sounds, that would be even more perfect! :cheer2:

I can email or fax the document.

If you know of another forum, (Chinese/English forum?) where people may be albe to help, that would be fine too. :)

Have you tried some of the online translators that are available for free? I know my husband uses this at work when he has to work on a system in chinese. http://www.freetranslation.com/ there are others out there google document translation for others. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I just went to take a look but unfortunately that online translator & the other links I just Googled only seem to translate it from Mandarin ito English, not Pinyin. :( Unless I'm Googling the wrong search words. :confused3

boards. I know there are many of them out there. They should be able to assist you.

Thanks you two. :)

The link for the second pinyin tool looked promising, but when I tried it, I found I couldn't copy & paste the Chinese characters from the adobe acrobat file. Oh, well.

I'll look for the Chinese adoption forums. :thumbsup2

I know Pig Latin...does that help???? :teeth:

When do you need the translation by? DW Lauri's assistant took a course in Mandarin and Pinyin in college. Not sure if she could translate it or not and Lauri won't see her again until Monday - but if you aren't in a rush, maybe she could ask?

Thanks, I have someone who can help out on Sunday. I was hoping to get it done earlier, if possible. I need to memorize the speech.

A friend made an audiotape of the text, but some of the sentences are said so quickly, and some of the sounds just don't translate into English sounds. Following along with the Pinyin would really help. My friend is a flight attendant & naturally with this flight emergency, had to go in for emergency training & can't help anymore. :(

If the Pig Latin can be done with a Chinese accent, I'll take it! :teeth:

When someone mentions grasshoppers & Chinese, it reminds me of David Carradine in that old Kung Fu series. "Grasshopper, when you can snatch the pebbles from my hand, it will be time to leave..." :happytv:

I discovered the complexites of Chinese -> English translation when I asked some Chinese colleagues to translate the characters shown on the photocopy I made of an ammunition carrier box. (WW2 supplies made in Canada by a washing machine factory for supply to the Chinese Nationalist forces)

They were completely baffled by the letters and told me the Chinese language (whether it was Cantonese or Mandarin, I don't know) is very contextual. As soon as I told them it was a photocopy of a box lid, they were able to complete the translation without problem.
