My husband may be accepting a position in SLC, meaning we'd be moving from the East coast. We would be selling our house here, and in the interm would want to rent an apartment in SL for around a year. What are the nicest apartments in the city in the more active part of town (restaurants, etc within walking distance)?

In a perfect world I'd have the following:

Washer/dryer in unit
Marble counter tops
Walk in closet
Fireplace
2 Bedroom
Nice view

...I sound like a spoiled brat, don't I?

I almost moved to SLC from Toronto, but found out my wife was expecting and we changed our plans rather quickly!

The transportation around the downtown core is pretty good, if a bit touristy. Being right in the city was pricey, and we were looking for a house about 45 mins out of town towards the Layton area.

As far as something more central, our 'in town' pick was the Murray area, but everyone's preference is different.

I'm assuming you've at least been out there and spent some time before making the decision to move? It's an interesting change from the east :) Depending on your lifestyle, it can be a shock to the system.

My blunt honest opinions of my time there (many months): Generally speaking, the population of SLC is very attractive. This is likely due to the fact that they don't abuse themselves like the rest of the country...

Alcohol is available, but only at private establishments or after ordering food at a restaurant. (ie. if you want a beer with dinner, you need your food first).

There are significant pockets of visible poverty, but I never felt uncomfortable or fearful while there. Most people I spoke to are either LDS (Mormon), or "Recovering Mormons" -- so expect religion of some sort to have an influence on life there.

If you haven't spent any significant time, try to find a way to visit for at least a couple of weeks and make sure it's the right move.

Aside from that -- Congratulations on the opportunity and good luck!

Skip my points about pricey areas.. if you're moving from NYC area, it'll be cheap in comparison :)

As far as Downtown apartments I don't know a whole lot. There are apartments at the Gateway that are relatively new and look nice. It is an area that the city is trying to revitalize and there are a significant amount of transients around it. However, there is some great shopping and restaurants in walking distance. Depending on your time frame the new City Creek Project might be a better fit for you if having a view is important - I am just not sure when it opens and if it will be just condos or if it will include apartments as well.

Another option would be to rent a home in the Federal Heights area around the Capitol - I know several people have found this to be the best option. Others really like the area of 9th and 9th and Sugar House. I would avoid anything in South Salt Lake, West Valley, Kearns, Magna, Murray, Taylorsville, and Midvale. There seems to be a higher amount of crime in these areas.

Do you have a car? The transportation around here is really hit and miss - though it is improving.

Good luck to you! New York to Salt Lake is a big switch!
