Hubby is finished his week home and going back to NM taking his bowling gear with him (a certified 300 gamer...seroius amateur!).

He is carrying it onboard as carryon luggage.

Silly question--but I do wonder...is this okay?

(I'm sure it isn't on the list--but at any time--can't they prohibit extra stuff? That's why I'm asking. Thanks!)

If I were him I would put it under the seat in front of him. I wouldn't want that falling out of the overhead bin.

Better be safe than sorry - it's not on the TSA list but I would call first.

I'm sure that he wouldn't want to be turned away or told that he can't take it.

As an example, CATSA (Canadian version of TSA) recently relaxed their rules re knitting needles, and now allows them on the flight. However, Air Canada still shows them as a prohibited item, as does Lufthansa, and they will say 'no' if you ask to use them (or remove them until the end of the flight). Airlines may have their own rules, so even if TSA allows something, airlines may not.

He's probably going to end up checking the ball. This is from southwest's site--Bowling balls may be accepted as checked or carryon baggage in an appropriate bowling bag, which has a metal frame specifically designed for transporting bowling balls. Any bowling ball that is not packed in an appropriate bowling ball bag will be conditionally accepted. Bowling balls carried onboard must be stowed underneath the seat only.

SWA's carry on dimentions max out at 10x16x24. Most airlines use 22x14x9 as the standard. How big is a bowling ball? 8.5 inches without the bag with the metal frame.
